South Africa has got it going on right now. Forget football (the country’s footballing heritage was decimated by apartheid), in 2010 it’s South Africa’s young party starters, streetwear entrepreneurs, dance music moguls, grassroots organizations, and Pan-African publishers who are attracting the eyes of the world.

South Africa has never considered itself anything but a First World country and this is what a new generation is out to prove. In our special South Africa issue, headline artists BLK JKS meet guitar hero Dr. Phillip ‘Malombo’ Tabane; international dance music stars Black Coffee and Culoe de Song provide an entry point into the ubiquitous house music scene; and in the beating heart of Soweto we meet the country’s future leaders. We also revisit the radical 1960s jazz players through Basil Breakey’s photography, the multi-racial 1980s hip-hop movement in Cape Town and highlight new movements like the Pan African Space Station.

Elsewhere in the issue, Bilal gets us all hot in the middle, DJ Spinn gives us a brief history of Chi-Town’s Footworkers and how he needs Juke Music All Night Long. There’s Sun Ra’s Arkestra, The Now Sound of Brasil, Colombian soundsystems and much more…

Truth & Soul Records is proud to announce the re-release of Lee Fields Problems. The sonic palette of this record reaches far and wide, ranging from the rampaging psychedelic funk of “Bad Trip” to the softer introspective sounds of “Honey Dove”, but that’s just the beginning. The album opens up with “The Right Thing”, a gripping tale of love found and love lost, set to the super heavy popcorn meets afro-funk backbeat. In “I Don’t Know Where I’m Going (But I Know Where I Came From)” the lays down a super heavy, Bobby Byrd-esque groove with Lee emoting frankly about perils people face and about finding your own way. We find our way to the title track, “Problems” a meditation on many of the trials and tribulations that Lee himself has had to overcome over the years.

The band supports him with solid, take-no-prisoners guitar, heavy bass and a mouth watering drum break that will have producers funning to their samples. “You Made A New Man Out Of Me” gives drummer Olu “Rocksteady” Owudemi the chance to lay down a drum beat that would make Clyde Stubblefield proud. The rest of the band follows his lead with succinct stabs of guitar and horns, while Lee floats over the top, giving thanks to the woman who changed his evil ways. “Rapping with Lee” finds Mr. Fields delivering a heartfelt discourse on how to keep and love one lady in a humorous and heartfelt way that only he could do. The fills in around him, with sweet horns and Fender Rhodes chiming in over a tough funk groove. Lee takes a break on “Clap Your Hands”, letting the band get down to business, with a heavy, happy party track that is a sure fire hit on dance floors worldwide. On “Honey” Lee pays tribute to his lifetime love over a slow, organ filled groove that hits hard and won’t let up. Last but not least “Near East” is another instrumental track by the band. They expand their sound, capturing an eastern feel and groove while still creating that innate funk toughness that The Explorers are famous for. Long out of print and highly coveted, we are happy to release the CD in a paste-on gatefold cover.

Dubstep pioneer Maddslinky - also well known as Zed Bias - has signed to Tru Thoughts to release his new album, ‘Make A Change’. The first single is “Special” featuring Omar. A full colour sleeve houses a 5 track vinyl EP and a 10 track bonus CD, with a brand new track co-written with Mr Scruff plus all-star remixes from MJ Cole, Toddla T, At Jazz, Chimpo and Simbad. Also included, is the video. Omar’s career at the forefront of British soul has seen him collaborate with Stevie Wonder and other greats including MOBO winner Estelle, Angie Stone, Rodney P and Erykah Badu to name a few. “Special” is a perfect marriage of his immense talent and charisma with the cutting edge production of Maddslinky.
Under his Zed Bias moniker, Maddslinky has been supported by BBC Radio 1’s Zane Lowe, Annie Mac and Pete Tong. He hit the UK Top 40 in 2000 with “Neighbourhood” - one of the all time classic UK garage tracks, which was re-released last year with a remix from Roska that fully redefined its importance to a younger generation of clubbers. The ‘Make A Change’ album features collabs with Skream and other major names in the current UK music scene.

Maddslinky On Tru Thoughts

The TMA-1 headphone has been tested and tweaked by the world’s most skilled DJs, designed by Danish design firm KiBiSi and further developed in cooperation with Tartelet Records, Mannhandle and Thank You For Clapping.

The TMA-1 takes its name from a magnetic anomaly in Arthur C. Clarke’s science fiction classic 2001: A Space Odyssey, with the designers hoping to replicate the durability of the underground monolith that created the disturbance in the novel. This should come as good news to DJs who’ve gone through multiple pairs in the past due to inevitable mishaps in the booth. The new cans boast a frequency response of 20Hz - 20.000Hz.

The TMA-1 has also been designed alongside Tomas Barfod AKA Tomboy of WhoMadeWho, and Fredski, who together run the Tartelet label. With the help of the Tartelet guys, they’ve managed to rope in a diverse array of product testers, with Kode9, Michael Mayer, Erol Alkan, Flying Lotus, Matthew Dear, Pilooski, Luciano, Hudson Mohawke and DFA’s James Murphy all giving their feedback and advice along the way.
