The sonic palette of this record reaches far and wide, ranging from the rampaging psychedelic funk of "Bad Trip" to the softer introspective sounds of "Honey Dove", but that's just the beginning. The album opens up with "The Right Thing", a gripping tale of love found and love lost, set to the super heavy popcorn meets afro-funk backbeat. In "I Don't Know Where I'm Going (But I Know Where I Came From)" the lays down a super heavy, Bobby Byrd-esque groove with Lee emoting frankly about perils people face and about finding your own way. We find our way to the title track, "Problems" a meditation on many of the trials and tribulations that Lee himself has had to overcome over the years. High Jazz, the name itself a tribute to the landmark jazz-fusion album released by Stanton Davis's Ghetto Mysticism in 1976, shows a marked development in Madlib's craft. Since the introduction of Madlib's Yesterdays New Quintet releases nearly a decade ago, the producer's core group of musicians and collaborators (known collectively as "Yesterdays Universe") has grown by the dozens. The notoriously elusive, publicity-shy and anti-commercial ethic of the group has kept many of the recordings from every being released, while others have been pressed anonymously, kept within the group or distributed only among private collectors. Among the newly released tracks on High Jazz are a Madlib, Karriem Riggins & James Poyser collaboration, the debut of groups Generation Match, The Big Black Foot Band, RMC, and a 15-minute live piece by Yesterdays New Quintet (recorded at a secret show in 2000). Fauna follows up his debut album Three Piece Puzzle from 2005, and since then Jneiro has gone on to work with artists such as TV on the Radio, MF DOOM, Khujo Goodie from the Goodie Mob, as well as with his own groups and aliases like The Shape of Broad Minds, Dr Who Dat?, and Capital Peoples. Jneiro has always had a Brazilian streak to his music, dating back to Dr Who Dat’s Beat Journey, with the cover decked out in the same colours as the Brazilian flag and the standout track Braziliant Thought. But finally with Fauna he gets to create a whole album inspired by the home of the Seleção. Giving credit to his mother for turning him onto Sérgio Mendes, Tom Jobim, and Caetano Veloso at an early age, it was an inspired dig through the record collection of KS label don KC tha Funkaholic, as well as discovering Arthur Verocai and Zuco 103, that put him in the headspace to compose most of Fauna over a three month period.
