BLOG: Dubdotdash - Music, Pop Culture & Beyond
Dubdotdash blog, from Peter McLennan
Here is the first in a series of introductions to blog spots we like to keep an eye on. First comes from local musician, DJ, writer, graphic designer and pop culture fiend, Peter McLennan Check it hereBefore I started this blog in 2003, I had various freelance writing jobs for Pavement, Rip It Up, Real Groove, NZ Musician, North and South, Lava, Planet and Stamp, and other magazines.
I stopped doing that cos the pay was rubbish and I wanted to concentrate more on making music (as Dub Asylum), rather than writing about other people and their music. Though I did get to meet some pretty cool musicians as a music journo.
The blog started out covering pop culture in general and over time I fine-tuned it to focus on music, as that was got the best response from readers. Now with social media like Twitter and Facebook, I can draw in readers from all over the planet. About half of my readers come from NZ, the other half from the US. I try and post something every two or three days. I also use my blog to post my play-lists for my radio show on BaseFM, which are a handy reference to remind me what I've been playing.
I used to get a lot of source material from other blogs (like Potholes In My Blog or Groovement), but these days most of the tips I get about new music come via Twitter @dubdotdash and Facebook. Those blogs are also posting to those places (Twitter/FB) too. There's so much more music coming at you from all corners these days, but I still rely on friends and fellow DJs to put me onto the good ish. Even though the music scene has changed dramatically in the last ten years, recommendations from friends still counts for a lot!
Peter McLennan is a musician, radio DJ (BaseFM), writer, and pop culture fiend. His latest musical release is a retrospective of his old band Hallelujah Picassos. Read about that here: http://picassocore.blogspot.com/
