Sola Rosa - Low & Behold, High & Beyond CD (WAY UP)
Available Here on CD
After the success of Get It Together and its accompanying remix album, Sola Rosa are ready to release their fifth studio album – another record jammed full of thick bass lines, deft musicianship and tight production.
Written over the past three New Zealand summers and drawing together a host of familiar names, plus fresh faces to boot, Sola Rosa’s new album Low and Behold, High and Beyond is a sonic tonic for anyone interested in where hip hop beats, nu-soul and funk converge.
Moving away from some of the Latin and reggae influences which have been a trademark of earlier albums, Andrew Spraggon has navigated his all-star cast in a slightly new direction; producing an album underpinned by his appreciation of classic hip hop and indulging his interest in nu-soul.
Low and Behold, High and Beyond features a wealth of vocal talent, including long-time UK collaborator Spikey Tee, who has worked with the likes of Roots Manuva, Jah Wobble and Morcheeba to name a few; US/UK singer Olivier Daysoul, who is a frequent collaborator with Hudson Mohawke, Oddisee and Onra; L.A. Mitchell, regular vocalist for Isaac Aesili and Fly My Pretties; and fellow New Zealander and Harbour City Electric singer, Ned Worboys.
The album was mixed by Yaron Fuchs, whose expertise behind the boards has seen him work with artists such as Talib Kweili, Public Enemy and Kings of Leon, while mastering was done by Ricardo Gutierrez (Justin Timberlake, Just Blaze).
Songs from the album have already been receiving support from the likes of Jeremy Sole and Anthony Valadez on influential L.A. radio station KCRW, and new material played out during Sola Rosa’s North American tour in July has been met with a rapturous reception from crowds.
Low and Behold, High and Beyond is another brilliant musical exploration from Spraggon. It proves that despite over a decade producing music, Sola Rosa is still making tunes as fresh and compelling as ever.

I Walk On Gilded Splinters - Johnny JenkinsWhat in the hell is country funk you ask? The answer is a complicated one, in part due to the fact that Country Funk is an inherently defiant genre, escaping all efforts at easy categorization. The style encompasses the elation of gospel with the sexual thrust of the blues, country hoedown harmony with inner city grit. It is alternately playful and melancholic, slow jammin’, and booty shakin’. It is both studio slick and barroom raw. And while these all may seem unlikely combinations at first glance, upon close listen, it all makes sweet sense. Light In The Attic presents Country Funk 1969-1975, a melting pot concoction of the music of Dale Hawkins, John Randolph Marr, Cherokee, Johnny Adams, Mac Davis, Bob Darin, Jim Ford, Gray Fox, Link Wray, Bobby Charles, Tony Joe White, Dennis The Fox, Larry Jon Wilson, Bobbie Gentry, Gritz, and Johnny Jenkins.
Featuring extensive liner notes by Jessica Hundley (MOJO, The New York Times, Vogue), original album/label artwork, and new illustrations by Jess Rotter (JessRotter.com, Rotter & Friends), this down home package is not only a treat for the ears, but a feast for the eyes. Think of this as a fantasyland where the Josie-era Meters back young Elvis singing Kris Kristofferson-penned slices of rustic American life and you’ll begin to understand the country funk vibe. It’s from the swamp to the city and all points in between.

As a real, genuine kid, long before he became Kid Koala, Eric San wanted an E-mu SP-1200 sampler– the Ark of the Covenent of hip hop production, used by his idols and heroes and imbued with legendary, almost supernatural, audio powers by rap aficionados worldwide. Unfortunately, he worked out he would have to deliver around eight million newspapers to buy one. Now, having hit his thirties, Eric finally has the machine he always craved.
Of course, music production has largely moved on, so Eric began working out what he could do with it - a kind of reverse engineering back to his childhood self. A little mucking around and it came to him – the blues was always about stripping music back to its bare essentials, which is exactly what the SP1200 does, too. Over three days he cut up and reassembled the bed tracks for “12 Bit Blues.” No sequencing software was used. Using the pads on the machine and a multitrack, Eric played each part of the tracks in real time, before finally returning and adding cuts over the top. The result is a really raw, immediate and strangely beautiful album, much like the music it draws on for its inspiration. In attempting to outplay and out-think the technology he is working with he revives the unworldly oddness of blues music before it became a staple of beer adverts and the jam-fantasies of middle aged marketing executives. This is the music, ripped and scratched and distressed until all those souls sold down the crossroads rise up and send shivers down your spine. It’s that real and, yes, that made up.
