PODCAST: Earshot with Cian - Sun 10th April 2011
DJ Muro - The Vibe Ob Session 2xCD (King)
Available Here
Stunning tribute to Roy Ayers from the main man in Japan, DJ Muro, over two gripping CDs. On disc one, Muro rips through a disc of classic Roy cuts, live outtakes, rare groove gems (Ethel Beatty) and more obscure productions (G. Keith Alexander's "A Mother's Blues"). For disc two, it's a rampant rundown of hip-hop and R&B cuts that sample the great man's work - again from the famous to the underground (E-Rule's "Listen Up") as well as his collaborations with rap's finest (Lord Finesse's "Soul Plan"). This is the definitive mixed double CD retrospective and celebration of the music of Roy Ayers - good if you're a diehard fan or newcomer to his abundant back catalogue. “Play That Beat Mr. Raja” is the very first compilation dedicated to Tamil recordings in the West. It explores the wild shores of these late 80’s Kollywood music productions. With an avalanche of cinematic strings, analog synths, mind-blowing vocal punchlines and drumkit earthquakes mixed with folkloric percussive elements, it reveals the audacity of composers such as Ilayaraja, Shankar Ganesh or Hamsalekha.
