FIRST THURSDAYS RE-LAUNCHING ART WALK ON K ROAD
Art sales to support nonprofit organisation Children on the Edge
Auckland, New Zealand - 8 November 2010 – First Thursdays, a K Road art walk and open craft market which hosted three events last summer, is re-launching on Thursday 2 December from 6-9pm. First Thursdays has teamed up with local collectives to bring together an exciting evening of visual art, dance performances, spoken word, craft, zines and live music. Iconic St Kevins Arcade and some of the surrounding art spaces will come alive with artists of all mediums.
Ten emerging artists, selected by Deborah White of Whitespace Gallery, will be featuring their works at Te Karanga Gallery, the dedicated
exhibition space for First Thursdays. Proceeds from art sales will benefit Children on the Edge, a charity assisting refugee and migrant
children on the border of Thailand and Burma.
St Kevins Arcade, Te Karanga Gallery and Verona Cafe will be bustling with diverse activities and entertainment including a vibrant craft market,
Cross Street Zine Library, spoken word organised by The Literatti, GeorgeFM DJ sets, facepainting by The Hunter Collective, Bobingi playing
traditional African Rhythms, live art and installations, vintage shopping and more - including a special performance by Japanese punk
jazz singer Miho Wada.
First Thursdays is based around the idea of bringing emerging NZ artists into the spotlight by showcasing artwork in a vibrant, entertaining and
social atmosphere. By connecting people through ideas, art and music, it aims to form a closer-knit arts community and spark awareness about
local creative talent to the general public.
This year First Thursdays is collaborating with some amazing art collectives including Cross Street Zine Library, The Literatti, The Hunter
Collective, Printable Reality and the Society of Brilliant Ideas (SOBI).
Inspired by the 19-year-old art walk tradition in her hometown, Seattle, Washington, event manager Cleo Barnett brought First Thursdays to New
Zealand last December.
First Thursdays held three events to a crowd of over 1000 art and music enthusiasts, gallery owners, collectors and K Road locals. Highlights
included a live art auction, hip hop, Brazilian samba and breakdance routines, and a colourful array of handmade craft and specialty goods.
“This community conscious event is all about us. That means you, me and the next door neighbor. Auckland has so many amazing artists of all forms, and we hope that First Thursdays provides a platform for people to come together, share their work, and get to know the creatives in your own community,†said Cleo.
First Thursdays is a FREE community event sponsored by the K Road Business Association and George FM in partnership with Foxes and Children On The Edge. Now a quarterly event with more dates scheduled for the First Thursday of March, June and September of 2011.
