Gilles Peterson - Black Jazz Radio (BLACK JAZZ)
Available Here on CD
Gilles Peterson, known for his record label (Brownswood), BBC radio show and deep crates, pays tribute to one of his favorite labels, Black Jazz Records. Very arguably a “Best Of” the label, this selection highlights the work of Doug Carn, whose track “Higher Ground” ranks up there with all time greats in spiritual jazz, Cleveland Eaton, his 9+ minute funk chant “All Your Lover, All Day, All Night” would segue well with Sugarcane Harris, early EWF, or Funkadelic. End result is that most all aspects of the label are referenced here, the soul/jazz/funk spectrum playing like a radio show, which perhaps was the curator’s intent… “I stumbled upon a Doug Carn album and my life changed” (Gilles Peterson) This is part 2 of a 3-disc mix series, coordinated with remastered reissues of the original albums on CD, featuring newly discovered photographs and artwork. Due out April 2013 on CD & LP+MP3, to pre-order please contact us at info@conch.co.nz
"Adventures" is the debut full-length album by French producer Dandy Teru. His opus is chock-full of notable guest vocalists and MC's and also includes remixes by Tall Black Guy, Belgian production duo Monkey Robot and his partner-in-crime Quiet Dawn.
In Dandy Teru's own words: "Adventures is a journey. On every side of the project, this opus is an incredible journey into a thema, a group of people (guests and co-directors) and friends, and a travel alone inside my own psychology. It's a witness testimony of a global state of mind, with the thema as the first stone of it: dreams." The album is an eclectic mix of downtempo, Nu Jazz, "Beat" music, Soul, House and Hip-Hop. Featuring up and coming talent such as Sami K who laces the track Burned with his blues-inflected vocals, Chicago MC Rita J on Wake Up Now and Sarah Gessler on Fragile Things, alongside renowned and well-known MC's Moka Only , Ty and Count Bass D. Hailing from Orleans, France, Dandy Teru wears many hats, multi-media artist, artistic director, radio host and selector on Laid Back Radio, but foremost as a music producer. He's been slowly making a name for himself yet still somewhat working in the shadows, with connections and contributions to a slew of young and burgeoning French artists in the Hip-Hop scene such as Tchad Unpoe, Pumpkin, Supafuh, and fellow producers Monkey Robot and Quiet Dawn. His production aesthetic however hasn't gone unnoticed with his inclusion in TBG 's (Tall Black Guy ) Tempo Dreams compilation for Bastard Jazz featuring new producers of note as well as a track on the Do The Dilla 2012 album. Some records are steeped in mythology. Frank N Dank’s 48 Hours is just such a recording. Why so few samples from Dilla? Was that MCA’s decision as they didn’t believe they could get clearances? Why did MCA shelve the recording for so long? Where’s the “original version”? There are nearly more questions about this album than cuts on the album. But according to Frank, “contrary to popular belief there was never an 'original version’ of 48 Hours. We started recording songs to sample driven beats of Dilla‘s and we got 80% of the album done and Dilla decided to change the beats to all the songs.” That’s right, it wasn’t MCA’s legal department, it was Dilla’s creative vision that stripped out the samples. But what about the sample laden “Take Your Clothes Off” and “Off Your Chest” you may ask? Frank interjects, “those were done after the fact.” And why did MCA shelve the project, was this a label afraid to release what the Detroit trio had concocted? Well that doesn’t appear to be the case. According to Nitt turnover in the A&R department at the time was rapid to the point that no one seemed to know who at MCA was responsible for the project. This led to a call to then MCA president Jay Boberg who agreed to release Frank N Dank from their deal. So there you have it. As Freud once said, “sometimes a cigar is just a cigar”. In the case of 48 Hours, it’s one hell of a tasty cigar. 48 Hours is now at last ready for the respect and proper release it has deserved all along, with the complete album as well as a second disc of Dilla’s instrumentals included. As Frank reminds us, “This is the exact version of 48 Hours that we (Frank N Dank & Dilla) turned in to MCA and the way Dilla intended it to be!”
