1. Ridda Mountain 2. Twelve 3. Mini Culcha 4. Keep It Up 5. Banana Wine 6. Talking Move 7. Temi 8. Mini Culcha (Beautiful Swimmers Remix)
Half-Mauritian singer-percussionist Mo Kolours returns with his second release: EP2: Banana Wine. Last year’s EP1: Drum Talking saw his blend of soul, dub and various electronic styles with the Sega music of his ancestral home celebrated far and wide.
Opener Ridda Mountain sets the tone: a hypnotic blunted incantation which draws heavily on a love of dub. Twelve sees a loose hip-hop rhythm paired with Mo Kolours’ unique sound palette, turning something familiar into something altogether strange. His percussion skills come to the fore on the fast-paced Afro-Latin workout Mini Culcha as he seeks to explore what dance music can sound like in 2012. The witty Keep It Up roots Mo Kolours in the here and now, a tale of a life spent disturbing the neighbours, while the astonishing Banana Wine takes its cue from a Sega classic and sounds something like dubstep imagined on an African island in the 1970s. Talking Move and Temi offer two more chances to dance to a different drum before Beautiful Swimmers from Washington’s cult Future Times label rejig Mini Culcha into the kind of compelling leftfield house that they’ve made such a stir with.
EP2: Banana Wine is the second in a trilogy of Mo Kolours EPs to be released by One-Handed Music, the increasingly renowned label behind releases from Bullion, Paul White and others. The first EP found favour with the likes of Hot Chip’s Joe Goddard, Gilles Peterson, Rob Da Bank, LA’s influential KCRW radio station, and many more. Mo Kolours performs as part of Paul White’s live band and will be bringing his new one-man live show to the stage this spring.

Last year, the Parallel Dance Ensemble (brainchild of Robin Hannibal of Owusu & Hannibal, Quadron, Boom Clap Bachelors and New Zealand Rapper Coco Solid) opened up the door to their colorful world of hip house and bubble gum pop with their well-received LP "Possessions and Obsessions". And now it's time for a heavyweight remix package: Four remixes of two tracks by the likes of Salax Peep Show (aka Axel Boman and Petter), Maxmillion Dunbar, Maxxi Soundsystem and Permanent Vacation's own Spectacle.
The two cheeky Swedish boys Axel and Petter from Studio Barnhus deliver with their rarely used, but very precious project "Salax Peep Show" a leftfield pop remix of "Occupied", somewhere between Herbert and Joakim but with the special Sweden twist. Man of the moment, Maxmillion Dunbar, who has been a decisive help in bringing the USA back on the map of electronic music with his Future Times label and the Beautiful Swimmers project, came up with a drum heavy, slow ocean house groover, not missing a little extra New Jersey flavor. Maxxi Soundsystem with his "Shopping Cart" remix, picked up that old school party vibe we have already been introduced to with the remarkable version of Alexander O' Neal's "Critcize". Finally, the Munich buddys David Muallem and Benjamin Röder aka Spectacle shine with their nonchalant, but very effective cut on “Shopping Cart”, which also marks their remix debut. We say "Prost" to this!UPCOMING: Lucky Paul - Elephant Island 12" (SOMETHINKSOUNDS)
Due out next week, to pre-order please contact us at info@conch.co.nz
No stranger to the cherry-picked pool of talent at somethinksounds, Lucky Paul now delivers his second weird and wonderful single ‘Elephant Island’ on the boutique label, backed by a couple of muscular remixes from Hyperdub wonderboy Ossie and the unstoppable Midland.
Lucky Paul may be a relative newcomer to the electronic music scene but the New Zealander and Electric Wire Hustle frontman (now residing in LA) has spent his lifetime pursuing worldwide musical inspirations. From studying traditional percussion in Brazil to living with Indian music legend Pandit Vikash Maharaj and his musical family, Lucky Paul is an accomplished alchemist in noise and rhythm with an obsessive attention to sonic detail and experimentation. Having already released the sublime and unusual ‘Slow Ground EP’ on somethinksounds earlier this year (including the huge ‘Thought We Were Alone’ remix courtesy of Wolf + Lamb and Soul Clap), Lucky Paul, now bestows his next unique installment.
The original ‘Elephant Island’ is an idyllic soundscape of emotive electronica but bursting with plenty of weird and raw musicality. Punching through Mara TK’s haunting vocal line are brawny drums and rippling analogue synths and bass - It’s a supreme percussive work out that builds into a dramatic orchestra of beats and strings. The alternative ’Piano Dub’ begins all passionate keys, space-out, stripped-back percussion and develops into another compelling wall of sound.
Rising producer and new label family Ossie steps up for the first rework with a deep and wonky voyage into the realms of UK funky. Lending ‘Elephant Island’ a lick of futuristic darkness, demented keys, pulsing bass and erratic staccato rhythms pierce the calm of the filtered vocal. An ideal match for the boundary-less spirit of somethinksounds, 22-year old East-London dweller Ossie has been setting labels Hyperdub and Lightworks alight with the ingenuity and versatility of his debut productions.
Midland offers his Midas touch in the second remix with an uplifting deep house rendering of ‘Elephant Island’. Swimming in warm pads and fuelled by a rolling groove, this is destined to provide the euphoric dancefloor moment.
