Lord ECHO from Black Seeds & Fabulous/Arabia with a follow up to his debut "Melodies" (2010). Lord Echo aka Mike Fabulous finally is back with his second album "Curiosities". His debut album "Melodies" took the organic groove world in a storm and turned into a classic-item in little to no time. The vinyl edition was selling for up to 100$ on Ebay until it got repressed just recently.Lord Echo is guitarist and producer for bands such as The Black Seeds, The Recloose Band & Fabulous/Arabia (you remember their incredible album on Jakarta Records last year?). His music is a roaring romp through his crazy world of sound, a magical, meandering journey through Afro-disco, Soul Reggae, Latin boogie and Ethio-Jazz.On "Curiosities", Echo is joined by a plethora of notable colleagues from every Newszealand band you can imagine (e.g. The Black Seeds, Fat Freddys Drop, Electric Wire Hustle), but in the end it's all about Echo! His remarkable talents are everywhere in abundance. The studio boffin has put down his soldering iron and picked up his tambourine in order to create a mighty album of towering tunes. Be it the wonderful Reggae infused vocal cut "Molten Lava" featuring Leila Adu on the vocals, or the funky instrumental dancer "Digital Haircut", Lord Echo manages to connect with the sound niche he carved for himself with "Melodies" without being redundant. Another classic in the making.Tracklist & Soundclips:
Shogun Airways lifts off again with the thunderous exotic burner 'Sato San'. Bronze-age Ethio-rock from east of the Eastern Suburbs.
On 'Sword of Doom' Jennifer Zea tears down a cataclysmic vocal performance upon a mysterious Indo-Cuban theme. The music looms from within a pungent cloud of incense.
Next up on Economy Records are The Yoot with "Sing Along With The Yoots"
In 2006 the notorious 'Hopepa' (aka Joe Lindsay trombonist extraordinaire) - eased his outlandish antics for a brief moment and formed his own group: The Yoots!
He enlisted his younger brother Sam Lindsay along with collegues Ian Gordon and Toby Laing. Then he summoned Mike Fabulous, the Yeabley Brothers and PK Hoskin. Still not satisfied, Hopepa called in favours from the likes of Craig Poll, Lucien Johnson, Will Ricketts and Adam Tijerina and finally the ensemble was complete.
With Ho at the Helm, the new group set out to navigate a musical passage somewhere between Calypso-Ska and Country-Soul.
THE YOOTS! took the stage at the Cuba Street Carnival, a series of outdoor festivals - as well as late night appearances too numerous to enumerate. Wild excitement and heaving dance floors followed THE YOOTS! at every turn and the air crackled with the strains of the finest party music - songs from the distant corners of the globe - from east Africa to the Caribbean.
Early in 2010, THE YOOTS! began to chart a slightly different course. Along with the rocksteady rhythms of Don Drummond and the Skatelites, other sounds: famous melodies from Aotearoa began to feature on the programe. A new era had commenced.
Songs such as 'Hine E Hine' and E Papa Waiari' WERE were heard alongside strains of the Calypso-Boogie and Creole Compa. Instead of hunting through rare records to unearth musical gems from distant lands, THE YOOTS! searched through their own experiences and earliest memories to draw on the rich musical tradidtion of these islands.
Melodies travel at a speed so rapid as to be immeasurable by science. Long before the words can be heard, the melody of the song has entered the listeners' dreams and there it will forever stay. Now is the hour Aotearoa, to SING ALONG WITH THE YOOTS!!
This debut solo release Melodies of Lord Echo (aka. Mike Fabulous), is a roaring romp through his crazy world of sound; a magical, meandering journey through Afro-disco, Soul Reggae, Latin boogie and Ethio-Jazz.
Those familiar with Echo's prodigious studio wizardry will be pleased to discover that this album contains his finest work to date. Never before has Echo combined with such panache, his penchant for heavy rhythms, along with his uncanny knack for subtle song-sculpting.
On Melodies Echo is joined by a plethora of notable colleagues from every Wellington band you can imagine, but this time it's all about Echo! His remarkable talents are everywhere in abundance. The studio boffin has put down his soldering iron and picked up his tambourine in order to create a mighty album of towering tunes!
