Producer Madlib (Otis Jackson) + MC Guilty Simpson = OJ Simpson / feat. Frank of Frank'n'Dank & Strong Arm Steady
OJ Simpson. That's the name of the album. No bloody gloves. No Ford Broncos. These are some 12 hard-hitting, straight-from-the-gutter hip-hop tracks featuring Guilty’s inimitable baritone, and an equal number of Madlib’s signature album-as-soundtrack/radio/sideshow arrangements, where the beat & sequence is as important as the rap. This, with a couple no-nonsense guest appearances, some cuts by J.Rocc, and a whole bunch of attitude, makes up one of our favorite projects in a while. The charisma that Detroit’s heavy hitting MC Guilty Simpson and the Los Angeles based Beat Konducta Madlib share testifies to a musical kinship that is rare in today’s rapper-as-an-accessory marketplace. Going back to Guilty’s first appearance on wax (Jaylib’s “Strapped†– 2003), Guilty over a Madlib beat to us is like hearing Guru over Premier circa Daily Operation, or CL over Pete around the time of “Straighten It Out.†Some times, a rapper and a producer just work well together. Various - (Jazzman Gerald Presents) Let's Boogaloo Vol.5 LP/CD (Record Kicks)
It's been a while since the release of vol.4 compiled by DJ Andy Smith, but now a brand new chapter of our bestselling and much loved "Let's BOOGALOO" collection finally sees the light of day. Much respected record collector, DJ & founder of the great Jazzman Records Gerald Short drops another "all killers no fillers" selection.... The winning formula has remained unchanged, once again you'll find a lot of rare gems along with a bunch of the best contemporary funk and soul productions. The result is an incandescent selection of deep funk, rare soul, modish- R&B, titty-shakers and jazzy 45s that go across the boards. On the deep funk front, the hard-hitting x-over version of "Kay-Gee" recorded by Floyd Lawson & The Hearts of Stone in 1975, Billy Larkin's "Funky Fire" and Keisa Brown's monster "Dance Man", a semi-unknown stormer brought to popularity by Ian Wright. On the soul side "Little Love Affair", a northern soul beauty recorded in 1969 by Patril Staten, x-over soul stormer from the early 70s "It's an Explosion" by Royale VII and "Get Yourself Together" from Ricardo Marrero's "A taste" LP. Amongst the new productions are "His Spoke", a raw, lo-fi gospel funk 45 from 2009 by All Nation Quartet aka Ozzy guitarist& funk/soul addict Kris Holmes, "Angel Food" by The Port Angels aka producer and multi-instrumentalist Joel Ricci, one of the best 45s to have come out this year and whose 300 pressed copies sold out immediately, and Mountain mocha Kilimanjaro from Japan, one of the hottest names on the new deep funk scene. But there's much more included here, such as "Makini", a grinding R&B/shaker from 1960s Tanzanian vocalist Sal Davis that is able to set every dancefloor on fire, mod-ish stomping R&B from Little Willie John and Freddy King or latin/tropical funk with The Soul Fantastics and The Invaders out of Bermuda. Funky as hell.. see you on the dancefloor fellas!

Kyle Hall - Kaychunk / You Know What I Feel 12" (Hyperdub)
Get it here
After his remix of Darkstar's 'Aidy's Girl Is A Computer' at the end of last year, Hyperdub were quick to request an EP from Kyle Hall, and these two fantastic tracks are the outcome. Just 18 years old and hailing from Detroit, Kyle Hall has been getting a lot of attention after releasing several EPs on his own Wild Oats label, plus a one-sided single for Omar S' FHXE imprint. However, this is his first full release for another label. Both tracks inhabit an interzone between live and mechanical music, full of details and fills that lend a playful, hands-on feel. 'Kaychunk' wraps lush arpeggios and classic warm Detroit strings around shuffling syncopated drums into an upbeat track that's almost a mirror image of uk funky. 'You Know What I Feel' combines 2-step kicks that sound like rain hitting wood, with great clouds of bittersweet chords, a see-sawing bassline, and a rich swooning melody that echoes Stevie Wonder's classic '70s synth-drenched soul.
