GIG: Shake & Bake - Easter Saturday 7th April 2012
Base FM's Shake & BakeEaster Saturday, 7th of AprilAt the Silo Park in Wynyard QuarterFREE ENTRY
This year's Shake and Bake is moving to a brand, spanking new location down in Silo Park in the Wynyard Quarter. It's all happening a little bit later than usual but here at Base FM we're all about extending your summer as much as possible. So make sure you keep Easter Saturday, the 7th of April, free for some good times with the Base crew.
The line up is even bigger than ever - we've got Che Fu, Julien Dyne, Team Dynamite, Imagine This, Manuel Bundy, Junior, Jusayin' and Zane:Tee all set to bring you the best day out to be had.
A big shout out has to go out to Silo Sessions for having us, as usual their great market stalls will be there selling their wares, plus a whole lot of delicious food vendors and there will be a licensed bar. There will be some Base related stalls up for you to peruse too. Cut Collective will also be bringing their Public Access 5 exhibition to the day, making art accessible to the public and showing their work inside one of the giant silos right there in the park. It's the first time the silos will be open to the public bringing even more meaning to the theme of Public Access.
If you've got kids bring them along too, one of the best playgrounds is right there and as always it will be a very family friendly Base FM affair.
LOCAL VINYL: Frank Booker - Fall Out EP (SLEAZYBEATS)
Due out very soon, to pre-order please contact us at info@conch.co.nz
Tracklist & Soundclips:
Now they've got the messy business of establishing 100% quality out of the way, those lovely chaps behind the SLEAZYBEATS BLOG Dutch/Danish imprint Sleazy Beats Recordings make ready with their 10th and FINAL release in this series.
By way of celebration, the Sleazy Beats gang did up a proper sleeve that features pictures of fans of the label with their records from all over the world!
And the music, well they've secured the unfathomable talents of mr. Frank Booker. The New-Zealand based producer who Co-Hosts the acclaimed Hit It & Quit It radio show with none other than Recloose. He doesn't put out much music (a handful of EPs over the past few years on class imprints such as Untracked, Japan's Wonderful Noise and Fine Art), but when he does get his hands dirty in the studio, the results are invariably exceptional.
Frank's chuggy, fuzzy, understated drums and driving basslines are some of the finest in the game, and he has found a way of weaving samples of old and forgotten soul nuggets into his productions that is neither obvious nor easy, layering sound upon sound and effect upon effect while still letting a track 'breathe' and retain the natural swing of the source material.
As it happens, the 'Fall Out EP' features some of Frank Booker's finest work to date. Title track 'Fall Out' is an irresistable uptempo peak time nugget that cleverly walks the line between moody deephouse and organic disco. Flip over for 'Boss', a pearl of a midtempo track with loads of oomph and drive that keeps building and building. On 'Points', the closing track of the EP, Frank Booker conjures up an infectious beatdown groove with a killer bassline.
A fitting finale to a fine series of releases.

The Definitive Survey Of America's Best, Independent 70's Soul-Ensembles. 15 rare and unreleased funky disco and modern soul tracks from 1971-1982, including songs never issued on the long out-of-print Soul Cal 12" single series. The double gatefold LP is presented with a perfect bound 80 page book printed on 150 gsm uncoated paper stock. The book is filled with rare photos and each band’s story.
A decade in the making, Soul Cal is the definitive survey of America's best, independent, 70s soul-ensembles. Profiled within this album and book are the bands that transitioned from funk to disco, the bands that kept up the backbeat as rhythm moved to the backseat. Against the odds, they left recorded artifacts for we at Now-Again to dig out, dust off and restore. Collected here for the first time are the musical dreams of dozens, dreams that were deferred but were never discarded.
Soul Cal features some well-known figures from the various "soul" scenes that paved the way for their resurgence. The Northern Soul, Modern Soul and Deep Disco and Funk circles have all obsessed over the likes of Luther Davis, Rhythm Machine, Mixed Sugar and Record Player. But these and Soul Cal's other bands - many of whom managed only to release a solitary 7" single in their heyday - will be unknown to most.
Their obscurity notwithstanding, the music made by these bands is sure to strike a chord within the soul of any person taken by black American music from the latter half of the 20th century. In his long-running investigation into this flux-period in black American music, compiler and key researcher Eothen "Egon" Alapatt sought not only licenses, records and master tapes - but the stories and backdrops of these
majestic soul songs and the ensembles that created them.
It is due to the immense research that his investigation demanded - and the trove of information and music he unearthed - that we at Now-Again decided to present Soul Cal as an album and a book at the same time. Soul Cal's music is too good to be anonymously relaunched and a CD or LP booklet can only hold so much information. Simply telling the stories of these bands without unleashing their largely unheard music just seemed unfair. Thus, Soul Cal offers the enthused a chance to listen to, read about and reflect on this great burst of black American creativity in the decade after funk, the decade before hip-hop.
