King Britt’s real name is King Britt. King James Britt, to be exact. Fitting, as the man’s demeanor is royal, his words poetic, and his record collection simply divine.
Sacrilege aside, we did have a glorious day with King. After navigating the unfamiliar Philly subway system on a rainy, windy Sunday afternoon, we alighted from the elevated train in King’s Fishtown neighborhood and wound around some blocks of funky corner stores and community gardens to find our man. Fabulous/Arabia - Unlimited Buffet LP (JAKARTA)
Mike Fabulous (The Black Seeds/Lord Echo) and Lawrence Arabia are two of New Zealand's young musical titans.
The pair have been quietly collaborating since 2009 - their first and only physical correspondence being two CDs of instrumental soul/funk/lounge/pop that Mike sent from Dunedin to Lawrence's mum's place in Christchurch. Lawrence then went into his childhood bedroom and composed lyrics and melodies over four of the instrumentals within about two hours of receiving the package. The following day in Dunedin, Mike Fabulous received an email containing these early efforts.
Over the following two years, interrupted by all manner of world tours, Fabulous and Arabia exchanged further ideas down the wires, and even met up once to record together.
Unlimited Buffet is the fruits of their labours and contains flawless harmonies, interjections of brass and smatterings of searing guitar, all underpinned by an elastic and funky rhythm section. It's a buzz-funk extravaganza with playful vocals of the ilk that James Milne is known for, featuring many falsetto refrains and awkward lyrical come-ons. Think of a wild unique mixture of Shuggie Otis meets the Beatles with a NZ twist. The band is a true NZ allstar band featuring Toby Laing and Joe Lindsay of Fat Freddy’s Drop, Lucien Johnson of The Black Seeds and Julien Dyne (BBE) on drums.
The gatefold vinyl will be limited to 300 numbered copies.
"Shogun Orchestra" is the latest from talented composer, multi-instrumentalist and Black Seeds member Lucien Johnson. In this album he draws upon his impressions of Port Au Prince, Haiti, where - in later 2010 - he spent some months working in a theatre production, and where he had the misfortune to contract malarial fever. Recuperating in Wellington, Johnson commandeered a NZ super group featuring members of Fat Freddy’s Drop and The Black Seeds.
"Shogun Orchestra" is a vehicle for Johnson's own compositions as well as for the melodies and rhythms he has absorbed in his travels to far-flung lands of East Africa, The Caribbean and the Indian Subcontinent. Far from being some weighty academic musical synthesis, ‘Shogun Orchestra’ is an explosive celebration of an album. From the opening salvo of shimmering high-life guitars, afro beat rythmns and ethiopian horns the listener is propelled on a wild ride into the steaming equatorial night. The band is entranced, possessed, playing on frantically aboard a carnival caboose festooned with ribbons, lanterns and baskets of strange fruit.
The vinyl of edition of the album is limited to 300 hand numbered copies.

Hallelujah Picassos - Picasso Core Jukebox - album out March 5
**
Following on from last year’s remastered collection of Picasso classics, Hallelujah Picassos are releasing the next installment in their reissue series - a newly remastered, digital album collecting the cover versions from Auckland’s legendary ska/ punk/ reggae/ pop/ thrash/ hiphop/ hardcore
outfit. It’s a bunch of songs originally done by the likes of Bo Diddley, James, Brown, HLAH, The Sonics (who are touring NZ in April), Greg Johnson and more, given a crazy sonic twist.
Kicking off with Peanut Butter, a hugely popular tune on student radio when released on cassette in 1991, 21 years ago. The band took the original reel to reel master tape to Stebbings and had them digitise it - they had to bake it first to get it to a playable state! Never heard it sound so good.
There are a few cameos in there too, like comedian/actor Alan Brough turning up to add vocals to Homegirl, a song originally done by Bobbylon and Roland in their Picassos’ side project, Riot Riddum Sound System.
There’s two previously unreleased songs seeing the light of day, covers of The The - Perfect, and Tears of a clown (Smokey Robinson and the Miracles, via The Beat, or English Beat). Picasso Core Jukebox comes with an e-booklet with extensive liner notes looking behind the songs and how the
band discovered them, along with previously unpublished photos.
Out Monday March 5, thru Bandcamp/Amplifier/iTunes and all good digital outlets. Digital only release. PCorp 004. Released by Loopy Fruit Recordings.
Also still available, Rewind The Hateman (CD/digital) a retrospective look over the Picasssos career, newly remastered.
TRACKLISTING:
1 Peanut butter (One way streets, 1967)
2 Who do you love (Bo Diddley 1957)
3 Psycho/Strychnine (The Sonics ,1965)
4 Tears of a clown (Smokey Robinson and the Miracles, via The Beat’s
version from 1979)

Described as (Sunday Star Times, NZ) ‘warm clouds of distortion and feedback cloaking every sound and gorgeous hazy melodies that swirl around you like smoke’. 5/5 stars
In Circles is finally given the treatment it deserves, this is a limited edition 12” pressing of what is to become a future classic lo-fi New Zealand album. This album sounds it’s best on vinyl, there is no doubt that the washed out distorted guitars and drums were made for vinyl. From The Crate Records delivers this record as is should be heard and seen, this boutique pressing was manufactured by Bill Smith Custom Records, a family owned business in El Segundo, California. The artwork has been re-worked specifically for vinyl, right down to the finest detail that includes a one page insert with new artwork.
About the album...
Recorded at multiple locations in Auckland, from the fanciest of recording studios to makeshift vocal booths in bedroom closets; with cellphone recorded pianos, and featuring musicians ranging from high school colleagues to IT programmers, ex flatmates, brother-in-laws and even a record spinning Texan cargo loader - In Circles, the debut album from award winning producer Jeremy Toy as She’s So Rad, is one expansive affair.
Drifting between gorgeously bruised, camouflaged pop songs coated with layers of washed out guitars and effects, and purposefully lo-fi beaty gear that references golden era hip hop while sounding modern enough to be tagged chillwave, In Circles is both economic and profoundly satisfying.
Appropriately enough it begins with Iceblock, a track that was originally recorded in Jeremy’s home studio in 2009. Making a splash on the b-Net network and also attracting the attention of Round Trip Mars, it became the catalyst for the direction of She’s So Rad with its irresistible lo-fi, hazy indie rock sound. From that exceptional entrance, every song is treated differently; with guitars from the 60’s, synthesizers from the 70’s, drum machines from the 80’s and samplers from the 90’s. Melding everything together, the album was processed through two quintessential ‘shoegaze’ delay/effects units, and an old Yamaha 4 track cassette recorder that was purchased at a thrift store in Vancouver, giving the whole affair a whiff of 1990’s garage rock.
Far from idle, elsewhere during the writing and recording of In Circles, Jeremy has been working with Sami Sisters on their debut album, Julien Dyne on his sophomore release for BBE, engineering for Ladyhawke on her first remix, as well as programming drums and playing bass for Liam Finn.
