Fly My Pretties is New Zealand's favourite live multimedia event starring a selection of our finest contemporary musicians, set to a stunning visual backdrop and filmed and recorded live! Since its inception, Fly My Pretties has grown to become a local legend of music that continues to reach people all over the world. Fly My Pretties - A Story is a conceptual extension of the previous two Fly My Pretties via a narrative that connects music, illustration, animation, charity and a message of change into one audiovisual experience. Opensouls - Standing In The Rain (From The Crates)

Standing In The Rain is Opensouls' terrifically accomplished sophomore album and well and truly solidifies their standing as a top-shelf NZ soul band. Standing In The Rain is a concept album, made with the intent to reflect the sound and feeling of a musical era; late-50s, early-60s British and American R&B. Inspiration was drawn from traditional songwriters such as Lennon and McCartney, Smokey Robinson, Holland/Dozier/Holland and Van Morrison. Consequently, the album has an unmistakable vintage quality, reminiscent of Motown in its heyday. Opensouls' aim was to create an album that involved the entire band performing 100% of the time. Unlike their 2006 debut, Kaleidoscope, with drum programming and computer sequencing, Standing In The Rain was tracked entirely live by the band's rhythm section and recorded at Jeremy's Spare Room studio at his home in the AK suburb of Westmere. The band didn't want a polished, expensive studio sound – after studying how old soul records were made, they used basic recording gear, pushing it to its full potential, obtaining a raw, gritty quality.

You're Wondering Now - The Specials From Conception To Reunion

1979. The dawning of a new era. Against the backdrop of the demise of punk, social unrest and the coming to power of Margaret Thatcher, The Specials burst onto the scene with their unique brand of music, sweeping up the nation’s youth with their edgy, politically-charged message and iconic ‘2Tone’ branding. Thirty years later, as the band celebrate their anniversary with a reunion tour, their hard hitting, poignant tales of teen pregnancy, knife crime and racism are still as prevalent as they always were.

Timed to coincide with the band’s Anniversary and the huge revival of interest that has aroused this year, this is the only book of its kind, meticulously detailing the story of this one-of-a-kind band, its members and their post-Specials careers, up to and including their reunion at Bestival in 2008. It also sees the first publication of a full gig listing, complete discography and an amazing collection of rare, unseen photographs from the band themselves. It also contains a foreword from Phill Jupitus.

Paul Williams is a concert promoter, creator and editor of the 1990s cult fanzine “Street Feeling”, administrator of The Specials website and valued contributor to many varied projects within the lively ska world. His life-long interest in The Specials inspired him to be the first to research and document the bands’ history, which he portrays with an easy, familiar style, making their story accessible to all.
