Seeing as I am having quite an exciting wander around the place over the next few months thought it might be a swell idea to attempt one of these bloggaton shaped devices, and Dustin and Cian have lent me their stream.
So lets call this Part 1:
I arrived in Barcelona about two weeks ago and stayed at the house of none other than Cesar The Spanish Fly. He has an orse pad with a terazza not far from the center. Luckily enough i timed my visit there to coincide with the Primavera Sound Festival and Cesar helped me get some crazy cheap tickets. It went over four nights, and to be honest a lot of the bands i hadn’t heard of before, which sounded like a good opportunity to broaden my horizons. Unfortunately most of what I saw didn’t inspire me a whole lot. The festival was sponsored by Ray Ban, which seemed a little unnecessary as every 2nd person on stage and in the crowd had on Wayfarers. No exaggeration, i have never seen an eye wear epidemic this bad since the early 90’s Oakley bloom. There were however some mean highlights. Acts like The Jesus Lizard completely obliterated any attempts the yoof were making when it came to Rock ‘n’ Roll. Throwing Muses were amazing, as was Neil Young… his guitar work kind of pretty much floored me. Surprise new act that blew my mind was a band called Art Brut - well worth checking out, brilliant lyrics and energy - reminded me of Crass for any old punkers out there… Also of mention are teen UK sweethearts Kitty. Daisy & Lewis who are all siblings, under 18 yrs old and play stand up rockabilly skiffle business with there Dad. Cute as hell and %100 authentic, playing on strictly vintage gear.
After my time at Cesar’s i caught a plane to that haven of mythology - Ibiza. My old man lives here so i have had the opportunity to visit a few times. I got all the clubbing bits out of my system a few years ago now so didn’t venture near the likes of Pacha or Amnesia, although by the looks of the posters and fliers around these scenes are still going strong. Biggest party seems to be ‘Wonderland’ @ Eden with Pete Tong and Groove Armada. Last Sunday went down to a local beach near my Dad’s house in the hills called Benirass. This is a place particularly favored by hippy drummers, and every Sunday is a drumming party on the sand as the sun sets. I went along with an Argentinian Rastafarian friend and had a few warm beers, listening to some very av drumming (man those hippies needed a Batucada leader of some sort!) and watching eccentric German MILFs dance as if possessed by the spirit Shango. I met a gypsy fulla from Seville on the outskirts of the drumming circle who was playing flamenco on a beautiful Spanish guitar, and i asked if i could have a strum. I just played a few blues riffs along with the hippies but the gypsy dug it and was soon wailing along in typical flamenco vocal style. It was a magical moment i can tell you, and we ended up jamming for about half an hour… def a highlight to date!
This afternoon i catch the ferry to the mainland and drive down to Morocco, where i am hopefully getting myself a press pass into a world music festival called Gnaoua World Musica Festival - pretty bloody excited bout that I can tell you what! So that is all for this post… hopefully have some interesting shiz to rave about in about a week… till next time
