DOWNTEMPO:
BALKAN BEAT BOX - BLUE EYED BLACK BOY (CRAMMED DISCS)
Recorded across a suitably diverse range of European locations  Ori's adopted city of Vienna, Austria, the Serbian capital of Belgrade and the band's mutual hometown Tel-Aviv in Israel were all bases covered on this album's journey  Blue Eyed Black Boy finds BBB going that bit deeper, finding striking melodies, rock-solid song structure and an ever-sharper political awareness alongside their typically artful sonic collision of global musical styles and thundering dancefloor beats.
STEINSKI - WHAT DOES IT ALL MEAN? 1983-2006 RETROSPECTIVE (ILLEGAL ART)
Steve Stein is one of the most influential producers in hiphop, sampling, and cut & paste. Known simply as Steinski, his legendary mixes with Double Dee, The Lessons, are cited as definitive influences by DJ Shadow, Cut Chemist and Fatboy Slim, among others. LOCAL PEEPS:
BENNY TONES - CHRYSALISÂ (EVERY WAKING HOUR)
Benny's solo album 'Chrysalis' will be released on Every Waking Hour Records in NZ in May 2010 . It s the product of 4 and a half years work and serves as Benny's reintroduction to the world as a producer and beat maker. The album features a diverse host of vocal and instrumental collaborators including Electric Wire Hustle's Mara TK, Taay Ninh and Myele Manznaza, Fat Freddy's front man Joe Dukie, Shapeshifter¹s Devin Abrams & Sam Trevethick, Rio Hemopo, Isaac Aesili, LA¹s Shihan The Poet, Adi Dick and many more.
DUBSTEP:
IKONIKA - CONTACT. LOVE, WANT, HAVE CD (HYPERDUB)
After a string of 12s on Hyperdub over the last couple of years starting with the now classic 'Please' in 2008, 'Contact, Love, Want, Have' is the debut album from Sara Abdel-Hamid aka Ikonika. 'Contact, Love, Want, Have' doesn't mess around or waste a note as Ikonika colours in and then discards the rulebook. Maybe it¹s her background as a drummer in a post-hardcore band, her love of R'n'B and hip hop that bring in the extra dimensions that makes her music stand out from the legions. Or maybe its just her ear for an odd melody.
NEW VINYL:
SOUL/FUNK/LATIN/JAZZ
THE LLOYD MCNEILL QUARTET - ASHA (UNIVERSAL SOUND)
Soul Jazz are issuing this super-rare deep jazz album from the Lloyd McNeill Quartet. This album was originally released by flute player Lloyd McNeill on his own private-press Asha Recording Company in Washington, DC in 1969 (30 years ago!) and only 1000 copies were ever pressed and Asha has been a serious collector's deep jazz album ever since.
EDWARD LARRY GORDON - CELESTIAL VIBRATION (UNIVERSAL SOUND)
Universal Sound is releasing the first album by the Eno-produced ambient artist Laraaji. Celestial Vibrations is a cosmic journey sounding unlike anything else when it was first released in 1978. Edward Larry Gordon Laraaji's album was first issued in New York as a private-pressing record with only very minimal distribution. This album, known to very few people, has been unavailable now for over thirty years.
MUSTAFA OZKENT - GENCLIK ILE ELELE (FINDERS KEEPERS)
The first release on our Turkish ANATOLIAN INVASION series, unbelievable eastern bongo rock private press.
V/A - B MUSIC - DRIVE IN, TURN ON, FREAK OUT (FINDERS KEEPERS)
Ace collection of esoteric psyche rock, Turkish rock, soundtrack business, folk funk, Bollywood wig-outs, oddball electronics, Asian weirdness, and more besides!
V/A - DEUTSCHE ELEKTRONISHE MUSIK VOL 1 & 2 (SOUL JAZZ)
The first seeds of German rock and experimental electronic music were planted in 1968, as students and workers in Paris, Prague, Mexico and throughout the world demonstrated against mainstream society, the war in Vietnam, imperialism and bourgeois values. The birth of a counter-culture, drug experimentation and social change expanded musical worlds. Germany experienced its own cultural revolution fuelled by these worldwide student and worker revolts and by a generation¹s desire to rid itself of the guilt of war.
EIGHTIES LADIES - LADIES OF THE EIGHTIES LP (UNIVERSAL SOUND)
Soul Jazz are issuing this seminal super-rare rare-groove album produced by Roy Ayers originally released on his own Uno Melodic label in 1980. This amazing one-off album produced by Roy Ayers featured the group Eighties Ladies made up of the singing talents of Susan Beaubian, Marva Hicks, Vivian Prince, Denie Corbett & Sylvia Striplin backed by an all-start line-up Roy Ayers band (including Rick James who shares the production).
HIP HOP
GUILTY SIMPSON - OJ SIMPSON (STONESTHROW)
OJ Simpson. That¹s the name of the album. No bloody gloves. No Ford Broncos. These are some 12 hard-hitting hip-hop tracks featuring Guilty's inimitable baritone, and an equal number of Madlib's signature album-as-soundtrack/radio/sideshow arrangements, where the beat & sequence is as important as the rap. This, with a couple no-nonsense guest appearances, some cuts by J.Rocc, and a whole bunch of attitude, makes up one of our favorite projects in a while.
DUBSTEP
IKONIKA - IDIOT 12" (HYPERDUB)
Idiot is already something of a hit with those who¹ve heard it being played out, combining hard soca drums with lush ecstatic melodic synth harmonies and a driving bass with a strange 8-bit melody that stumbles and trips around the rhythm.
V/A - JAHTARIAN DUBBERS VOL.2 (JAHTARI)
The Jahtari posse invade your area with an addictive digi-dub assortment. Notably this 2nd installment includes exclusive dubs from the Kevin Martin related Black Chow, the smokin' Tapes project and the mighty Disrupt next to Soom T, Solo Banton and more.
REGGAE / DUB
PRINCE JAMMY PRESENTS - STRICTLY DUB (PRESSURE SOUNDS)
This LP is taken from an obscure dub album that briefly surfaced in the early 1980's on the US imprint Jammys Records and is rightly regarded as a minor masterpiece of Jammy's mixing style.
