"Tempo Dreams Vol. 1" is a new compilation album on Brooklyn's Bastard Jazz recordings compiled by producer Tall Black Guy who has skyrocketed to noteriety through a steady stream of productions filled with incredibly clever sample flips and deft production chops - being championed by the likes of Gilles Peterson (who included him on the latest Brownswood Bubblers album), Lefto, Anthony Valadez, and countless others - as well as recently being named the winner of the Robert Glasper Remix competition. After making a connection and releasing a series of sold-out Tall Black Guy 7-inches through their BSTRD Boots sublabel, Brooklyn’s Bastard Jazz Recordings set their sights on a proper full-length release with Tall Black Guy. It became evident that Terrel was not only an incredible producer and collector of sounds past – but was also a connoisseur of a whole new generation of beatmakers. This group of international producers remain mostly unknown to a larger audience, and continue to bubble and simmer just under the surface. With a gentle nod towards the groundbreaking Headz compilations on Mo’ Wax that inspired the label’s beginnings 10 years ago, Bastard Jazz founder DJ DRM asked TBG to compile an album with 11 of his favorite joints from this tidepool of contemporaries. Countless nights of rapid ear movements later, and with an added touch from the tall one himself, the set is primed for release as: Tempo Dreams Vol. 1.

Fuelled by the unquenchable thirst of DJ Hugo Mendez and Frankie Francis to turn up new music and explore sounds from across the ages, Sofrito has built a unique reputation since it began ln the warehouses of East London in the mid 2000's. Now, following the success and critical acclaim of their debut compilation in association with Strut, 'Sofrito: Tropical Discotheque,' Hugo and Frankie bring the long-awaited follow-up 'Sofrito: International Soundclash.' The new selection effortlessly mixes the old with the new, plucking dusty gems from Trinidad, Colombia, Dominca, Congo, Cameroun, and beyond. With exclusives The Deep Pacifico Sound Of Grupo Canalon's 'La Zorra Y El Perol' - a new project from Nidia Góngora, a singer with Quantic's Combo Barbaro - a previously unreleased track by UK / Kenyan sensations Owiny Sigoma Band, and a tropical treats edit of Haiti's dynamite Les Difficiles De Petion-Ville. Their 'Sofrito Super Singles' vinyl series continues to make waves on the underground, unleashing raw dancefloor edits and attracting the likes of Daphni (aka Dan Snaith), Drum Talk, and Sweden's Tropical Treats to contribute guest re-works. Kelan Philip Cohran And The Hypnotic Brass Ensemble (HONEST JONS)

Phil Cohran was born eighty-five years ago in Mississippi. He grew up in St Louis, post-war home of jazz stalwarts like Clark Terry and Oliver Nelson (both of whom he played with), not to mention a genius called Miles Davis. In 1950 Cohran moved to Kansas City, where he played trumpet in one of the hardest swing-groups, Jay McShann's, touring proto-rock’n’roll with the likes of Big Mama Thornton. And Cohran led his own group, the Rajas Of Swing, spivved up in red jackets, grey slacks, blue suede shoes and turbans.

Then in the mid-50s he moved to Chicago. He had a small group with John Gilmore; in 1959 he was invited to join Sun Ra’s Arkestra. “With Sunny”, Cohran simply says, “I found my own voice”; and you can hear its emergence on Angels And Demons At Play, recorded in 1960, where Cohran’s zither is the magic ingredient of tracks like Music From The World Tomorrow.

When Sun Ra moved east in 1961, Cohran stayed in Chicago, founding the Affro-Arts Theater, and recording with the Artistic Heritage Ensemble for his own Zulu Records. The AACM had its first meeting in Cohran’s front room. With Oscar Brown Jr and Gene Page he wrote and performed in a show commemorating the nineteenth-century Afro-American poet Paul Lawrence Dunbar. He taught music tirelessly in schools and prisons.

He also raised a large family: eight of them are the Hypnotic Brass Ensemble. For each of them, their first teacher was their father, who famously insisted on giving them music lessons not just for several hours after school, but for several hours before school as well. Their father’s music was all around them as children; they all vividly remember lying in bed at night not being able to sleep because their father was rehearsing with the Jazz Workshop downstairs. For the Hypnotic Brass Ensemble, the voyage to where they are now has been fuelled by their father's teaching, by the example of his life, and above all by his music. Frankincense And Myrrh has long been a regular part of their set. Alyo — the opener on their first HJ's album — is a Cohran composition celebrating the lead dancer in his band. So this album is for all of them a natural step. Recorded in Chicago in June 2011 (by R. Kelly's engineer), the idea was beautifully simple — “my music and their band”, as Phil puts it, “we don’t have to rattle on more than that”.

It feels wrong, though, to call this a ‘debut’ record because it doesn’t sound like a first-try. Official debut, or not, House Shoes is not new. He released the now treasure-hunted Jay Dee Unreleased EP (1996), and Phat Kat’s classic  Dedication to the Suckers (1999) on his own imprint. He’s produced for the late Big Proof (D12), J Dilla, Elzhi, and Danny Brown. He’s DJ’ed for Black Milk, Guilty Simpson, Mayer Hawthorne, Slum Village, and too many more to list.

Technically, however, this is his debut LP. One that hip-hop ‘know-somethings’ have been asking for (for years). One he’s probably been holding on to for a while. One he’s finally letting go.

Let It Go, features two discs. The first is a full-length album boasting features by the ‘heavyweights’ and the ‘hungry’ alike, balanced between artists accustomed to hip-hop limelight, and those still chasing it.

The project bats with a heavy-handed Motown roster. Detroit-bred collaborators include Big Tone, Moe Dirdee, Black Milk, Guilty Simpson, and Danny Brown, among others. Los Angeles (Oh No, MED, The Alchemist, Co$$), Norfolk (Nottz), St. Louis (Black Spade), New York (Roc Marciano), and Chicago (Chali 2na, of Jurassic 5) pinch-hit throughout the project.

The second disc houses the instrumental versions from the record. It showcases the claps, snares, kicks, and soul-filled samples that House Shoes plates for Let It Go (and that might be overlooked next to the features, otherwise).

Songs like ‘Dirt feat. Greneberg’ (Oh No, Alchemist, Roc Marciano) and ‘Everything (Modern Family) feat. Fatt Father’ are tough to picture on the same project if listened to separately. In the context of Let It Go, however, they feel blood related and well placed. Shoes delivers an album that sound like an album (and not a mixtape) – no small feat in the topography of today’s music. He blends the songs, instrumentals, and interludes into a sequence that sounds like they all belong to something bigger than their time stamp and signature. Individually, the songs are strong, soaked in that neck-snapping, gritty-drummed, trouble-water-soulsampled thing that makes hip hop magnetic. To dissect the album into its parts would miss the point, though.

The triumph of Let It Go is the full hour of music, not any fraction of the 60-some-minute run time.
