Madlib - Medicine Show #7: High Jazz 2LP (Medicine Show)
Available here on 2LP, for the CD please contact us at info@conch.co.nz
Madlib Medicine Show #7: High Jazz is an all-new Madlib jazz production. High Jazz, the name itself a tribute to the landmark jazz-fusion album released by Stanton Davis's Ghetto Mysticism in 1976, shows a marked development in Madlib's craft. Since the introduction of Madlib's Yesterdays New Quintet releases nearly a decade ago, the producer's core group of musicians and collaborators (known collectively as "Yesterdays Universe") has grown by the dozens. The notoriously elusive, publicity-shy and anti-commercial ethic of the group has kept many of the recordings from every being released, while others have been pressed anonymously, kept within the group or distributed only among private collectors. Among the newly released tracks on High Jazz are a Madlib, Karriem Riggins & James Poyser collaboration, the debut of groups Generation Match, The Big Black Foot Band, RMC, and a 15-minute live piece by Yesterdays New Quintet (recorded at a secret show in 2000). The 15-track album runs a total of 61 minutes. Limited edition 3-disc vinyl: Madlib has collected an additional 30 minutes of music for the limited edition vinyl release of High Jazz. These tracks are not available on the CD or digital release. Album covers will be hand screened by Hit+Run with a design by Jeff Jank, and individually numbered. See photos below. With this release, Masstropicas begins its fascinating journey through time into 1970s Peru. Peruvian cumbia, the heartbeat of the nation that was and is loved by millions, has been rescued and is now being lovingly introduced to North American audiences.
There’s no better way to start than with the hypnotic electric guitars of the jungle, fabulously played by Ranil & his Tropical Band. The band originally hails from the Belen district of Iquitos, nestled within the heart of the Amazonian rainforest. The town is famous for being flooded for several months, transforming it into a steamy South American Venice; this undoubtedly influences its people and their music.
During our journey, you’ll enjoy the different sounds of jungle music we bring to your stereo. Mix a bit of lush greenery, cool waters, surging heat, sweat, joy, and psychedelia — Ranil & his Tropical Band are the final product.
DVD: Ricky Powell - Rappin With the Rickster (Five Day Weekend)
Available here on DVD
"Heavily bootlegged for years on VHS, Ricky Powell's early 90s Rappin' With The Rickster cable access show gave insight into the world of the foulmouthed, trouble-making New York City scenester. But this ain't your cousin's bootlegs - What you hold in your hand are carefully selected "best of" moments from the series, lifted straight off of Ricky's vintage analog masters and delivered right to your brain stem courtesy of the fine folks at Five Day Weekend. In addition to this incredible slice of vintage NYC street culture, the Rickster wanted to take it a step further with this release. We brought him back in the studio to get his Dean Martin on, hosting commentary over a virtual slideshow of his favorite pics from his ziploc bag full of slides. If that isn't the icing on the cake... we also laced him with a new camera, got him feeling nice, and turned him loose on Greenwich Village on some 2010 Rickster steez. So we got the new... and we got the old. And yeah yeah... it's real cool to be retro these days... but for every thousand emulators there's only one innovator... Ricky Powell is the general... The lazy hustler supreme."
