The book is written by esteemed music journalist Stevie Chick (a founder of Loose Lips Sinks Ships as well as long term NME scribe and current contributor to the Guardian, Mojo etc and author of books on Black Flag and Sonic Youth, amongst others) and includes exclusive interviews with key artists and label staff. Its 192 pages are also lavishly illustrated with original photographs, illustrations and flyers plundered from the depths of Ninja Tune and their artists' archives.

The nascent Angolan music scene was set on fire by a small group of intrepid singers, backed by an array of super tight bands and led by extraordinary guitarists who revolutionized the musical and the political panorama of the 60s and 70s. A powerful confluence of traditional rhythms from Luanda's islands, psychedelic guitar sounds imported from neighbouring Congo, Latin grooves, old school Caribbean merengue and the hard beat of the angolan carnival bands conspired to create the modern music of Angola. These sounds were immortalized by two excellent recording companies - Fadiang (fábrica de discos angolano) and Valentim de Carvalh.
Rikki Ililonga & Musi-O-Tunya - Dark Sunrise 2xCD (Now Again)
Now Again Records is proud to present an album entitled Dark Sunrise, an anthology of Zambian "Zam-Rock" godfather Rikki Ililonga and his groundbreaking band Musi-O-Tunya. The anthology surveys Musi-O-Tunya's rarely heard 7" singles - not just the first psychedelic rock music, but the first pop music independently released in Zambia - their debut album Wings of Africa and follows Ililonga's solo career in its first stages, with his Zambia and Sunshine Love albums. While global psychedelic rock and funk enthusiasts have recently been introduced to Zam-Rock via Now Again and Shaddock's re-issues of the likes of Witch and Amanaz's early albums, Dark Sunrise stands as the definitive document that, both musically and in prose, shines light on this African musical hotbed.

Captn K - Swamp Groove 10" (Picnic)
Captn K from Picnic is busy writing dance jams for his next release but in the mean time has decided to give us a couple of groovers he whipped up to play at his local and they are the perfect pub tunes (and long enough to grab a beer and visit the loo). Swamp Groove is a blues groover that keeps the heads bopping and the beer flowing, a solid beat and a swampy vibe provided by smooth blues guitar by label affiliate Bretski. Jews harp, melodica and random percussion help define this bayou style beat. On the flip is "Gravyboat" again sitting on a solid beat with funky guitar and trumpet excursions throughout the track giving it a funky jazz feel, sounds better through speakers than on paper...check it out.

20 Years ago the Groove Merchant record store opened it's doors on Haight Street in San Francisco. The rare funk, soul and jazz emporium became a mecca for collectors, DJs, music fans and producers.

Infected" is a double 12" featuring vocals by Hitomi and Roots Manuva + remixes by Autechre and Scratcha DVA. It's a bridge between the acclaimed London Zoo album and The Bug's forthcoming dub battle with legendary producer Adrian Sherwood. Having emerged with notable critical acclaim for last year's King Midas Sound album Waiting For You, Kevin Martin reunites with King Midas Sound vocalist Hitomi for the lead track Catch A Fire and reworks Skeng into a harrowingly sick protest song recalling 80's pop-realist classic Ghost Town by The Specials. Catch A Fire features Justin Broadrick (Jesu/Pale Sketcher, and ex Godflesh) albeit fleetingly, with an ear catching guitar drop in the centre of the tune. This is their first work together since the infamous Techno Animal albums they worked on together...
