DENIZEN REVIEW: Conch Backyard Boteco

We venture into Ponsonby Road local Conch and find a backyard café worth shouting about.
Tipped off by a fellow foodie, we wandered into Conch Records recently, intent on finding out more about their latest project; a mysterious new day time restaurant serving up delicious South American fare.
Open for both breakfast and lunch, you only need to wander past their wood fired pizza oven and into the open air courtyard to see what all the fuss is about. Pared back, intimate and quieter than the hustle to be found on Ponsonby Road, we quickly nabbed one of their wooden cabanas, lapping up the afternoon sun streaming through.
While the menu changes each week in order to appeal to the creative whims of the chef and the availability of in-season produce, some dishes are kept on as crowd pleasers, the emphasis on healthy, fresh food with a South American bent.
Ravenous, we took chef Bevan Kaan’s advice and opted for the organic lamb shoulder with asparagus and market greens. Slow cooked for three hours, it’s melt-off-the-bone tender and we certainly hope this is one dish that remains on the menu. Their wood fired quinoa and sweet corn cakes with spicy pickles and a hearty serving of fresh guacamole was another stand out, and with the taste of wood fire lingering long after our meals were finished, we left feeling undeniably satisfied. If you’re hungry and looking for a chilled out space, this secret boteco will certainly hit the spot.
Conch is open from Wednesday through to Sunday, with breakfast available from 8am – 12pm and lunch from 12pm to 3pm.
