East Liberty Quarters - Holiday 7" (ROTATING SOULS RECORDS)
Available Here
2 tracks of synthy disco boogie for true fans. More stripped down & less mellow than that their 1st EP, but brimming with old-school goodness.
Following his EP on Rotating Souls East Liberty Quarters (aka GrandEar, BusCrates 16-Bit Ensemble and NiceRec.) now drops a killer 45 on his eponymous imprint. Featuring the stripped-down electro-boogie sound and 8-bit synth thrills that made his Rotating Souls EP such a treat "Holiday" will have the folks bumpin' on the dancefloor big style. Flip it for the electro-funkin' "Streetlights", which sounds like it's been been lifted straight outta 1983 - with uplifting chord progressions and killer rhythm.

UPCOMING: Funkcommunity - Dandilion / Never Fading 7" (WONDERFUL NOISE)

Funkommunity's Isaac Aesili and Rachel Fraser are no strangers to the NZ Music Scene. Having played, toured and collaborated with some of the country's top artists, the prolific pair now join forces to create Chequered Thoughts, a forward-thinking album of future soul music. It's a collaboration that has been years in the making. Having first worked together on a song called 'I'm All In' from Isaac's debut solo album 'Eye See', Isaac and Rachel's powerful dynamic is finally realized in their debut release. An accomplished vocalist and songwriter, Rachel Fraser's voice is reminiscent of old school jazz, soul and funk styles infused with contemporary R&B. A lady of many credentials, Rachel first gained international attention with Recloose track, 'Catch a Leaf', and has since been busy performing with bands such as Sola Rosa and Recloose Live. Isaac also brings a string of credentials to the band. Over the past decade, Isaac has been an integral part of many Kiwi acts Solaa, Opensouls, Recloose Live and Eru Dangerspiel and has toured as a guest musician with iconic New Zealand bands Trinity Roots and Shapeshifter. He's also co-written songs with Aaradhna, Ladi6, Hollie Smith, Mara TK and Julien Dyne and his session work includes recording for House of Shem, Homebrew, Anika Moa, Mt Eden and Crowded House. Funkommunity's first single 'The Light' was recently licenced to EMI Italy. This track was included on a compilation called "Vibe" alongside other artists including Aretha Franklin, Curtis Mayfield, Aloe Blacc, D'Angelo and Stevie Wonder. Last year, the Parallel Dance Ensemble (brainchild of Robin Hannibal of Owusu & Hannibal, Quadron, Boom Clap Bachelors and New Zealand Rapper Coco Solid) opened up the door to their colorful world of hip house and bubble gum pop with their well-received LP "Possessions and Obsessions". And now it's time for a heavyweight remix package: Four remixes of two tracks by the likes of Salax Peep Show (aka Axel Boman and Petter), Maxmillion Dunbar, Maxxi Soundsystem and Permanent Vacation's own Spectacle.
The two cheeky Swedish boys Axel and Petter from Studio Barnhus deliver with their rarely used, but very precious project "Salax Peep Show" a leftfield pop remix of "Occupied", somewhere between Herbert and Joakim but with the special Sweden twist. Man of the moment, Maxmillion Dunbar, who has been a decisive help in bringing the USA back on the map of electronic music with his Future Times label and the Beautiful Swimmers project, came up with a drum heavy, slow ocean house groover, not missing a little extra New Jersey flavor. Maxxi Soundsystem with his "Shopping Cart" remix, picked up that old school party vibe we have already been introduced to with the remarkable version of Alexander O' Neal's "Critcize". Finally, the Munich buddys David Muallem and Benjamin Röder aka Spectacle shine with their nonchalant, but very effective cut on “Shopping Cart”, which also marks their remix debut. We say "Prost" to this!Various - Spiritual Jazz Vol. 2 2LP (JAZZMAN)

Esoteric, modal and deep jazz from the European undergound, 1960-78' ... As the '60s progressed, cultural and political revolutions occurred both in the US and in Europe. Jazz was both a victim and a saviour, with radical developments in the music occurring in both continents. In the US, artists took control of their own musical destiny as small labels broke away from the mainstream, expressing new and creative visions of freedom and peace against a backdrop of civil unrest, repression and war. Be sure to check the first volume of this series, Spiritual Jazz (JMANCD020). In 60s Europe the jazz community forged ahead with a different revolution, that of breaking away from mere emulation of their American counterparts. A distinctive, European jazz sound began to develop that combined traditional music from across Europe and around the world with the creative freedom so abundant in American jazz. Over time the most forward-thinking creative talents of the post-Coltrane European jazz generation crafted and nurtured sophisticated and multi-faceted styles of jazz that were as radical as they were beautiful, giving modern jazz a characteristically European flavour. THE MUSIC A heady mix indeed, stirring jazz overtures with orchestra and choir, festival performances recorded live from the grassy heartlands of central Europe, modal montages inspired by pilgrimages to Asia and Africa, experiments in rhythm and sound where modern jazz meets traditional Balkan and Flamenco folk music. This is Spiritual Jazz - European style. We dedicate this album to Michael Garrick, who died shortly before its release. His contribution to UK jazz was profound, and we're proud to include one of his previously-unreleased tracks. > All tracks fully licensed and digitally restored from the original master tapes > Comprehensive liner notes with individual notes on each track with original stories direct from the musicians and artists > 16 page colour CD booklet with in-depth liner notes, album cover scans and previously unpublished photographs > Most tracks never before reissued ¡V previously only available on rare LP's that change hands for hundreds of dollars. > 180g double vinyl pressing with thick, glossy double gatefold sleeve and colour inserts > RARE and FINE music heard
