BLACK JOE LEWIS & THE HONEYBEARS With Tyra Hammond & The Bluebirds Powerstation , Wednesday 7th December 2011 Tickets available Tuesday 11th October from Ticketmaster For more information – to www.powerstation.net.nz
"It was Black Joe Lewis & The Honeybears who were Splendour’s most unexpected triumph. Their modernised take on old school funk and blues set them apart from the 2004 hype bands which built the crux of the line-up’s remainder. With simple, measured grooves their spine, the Honeybears complemented the broken moan of Joe Lewis to perfection; the mingling of Matt Strmiska’s solos with guesting vocal troupe The Relatives making for one of the festival’s early highlights." Sound Republic "A lengthy walk to GW McLennan for Black Joe Lewis & The Honeybears proves totally worth it as the Austin, Texas combo virtually breathe fiery, feisty rock & soul. “This lot would have easily killed at Bluesfest” is the thought going through many heads – including ours – as many, many more feet keep dancing to the horn-drenched stompers." "Black Joe Lewis and his merry Honeybears provided the kind of bluesy, alt. country soul you’d expect from the house bands from True Blood and Treme. Epic - and I couldn’t feel my feet." Junior Magazine
"Black Joe Lewis was the Friday highlight. They were probably booked off their live rep, and the astonishing spectacle of the slight Joe screaming curse words like a modern day Howlin’ Wolf was a sight to behold. With a swaying Honey Bears horn section (swaying!) and a tinny, but still brutal, double-guitar attack, any "modern-day pastiche" fears were put to rest with the call-and-response on ‘It’s Alright’ getting louder as it went on. A raucous ‘Booty City’ (check it here at Coachella) followed, featuring the band screaming together into the one mic as Black Joe stretched his wail to breaking point — they were that good." The Vine

UPCOMING: Julien Dyne - Glimpse CD/12" (WONDERFUL NOISE)
Following on from the success of 2009’s “Pins and Digits”, Julien Dyne announces the release of his second full length album “Glimpse” .
Stylistically a continuation of the futuristic elements hinted at on “Pins and Digits” “Glimpse” offers studies in shimmering melodies, woozy beds of rich harmonic sounds that pulsate over thick percussive backdrops.
Picked up by Japanese boutique label Wonderful Noise and UK heavy weights BBE 2009s “Pins and Digits” received worldwide exposure from BBC DJ’s Gilles Peterson and Benji B reaching both DJ’s ‘ top 100 ‘ lists for that year.
‘Glimpse’ offers to raise the bar higher again, moving further into exploratory electronic forays and deeper into hazy beatscapes.
LOCAL: New 7"s from Economy Records
The Yoots - Nga Iwi E / Toia Mai

Shogun Airways lifts off again with the thunderous exotic burner 'Sato San'. Bronze-age Ethio-rock from east of the Eastern Suburbs.

Oddisee - Rock Creek Park LP (MELLO MUSIC GROUP)
Available Here on LP
Oddisee, since inception, has been a consistent rhythmical force, more like a steady rolling, beat grinding machine, slash emcee, slash producer. Just a few months after the release of Odd Seasons (which was no small feat), the artist has yet another head nodding collection of fire. Rock Creek Park is comprised of mostly instrumentals that have the same incredible soul infused feel that one will come to expect from the beat magician who is anything but stingy with his art. Odd Seasons was a rare treat for fans consisting of an unprecedented and unbelievable amount of tracks (32) for any artist in this day and age. Don’t miss the free promo track from the album Traveling Man after the jump… The creation of Rock Creek Park was completed in a total of two weeks due to a switched deadline. But the production of the album has in no way been compromised and the feel is anything but rushed. In fact there is a mellow, relaxed, un-rushed feeling that carries throughout from beginning to end solidifying Oddisee as a truly spectacular producer. In those two weeks Oddisee bounced around from city to city collecting live material from several musician friends that would make the album the rare gem that it is. No matter what genre your preference, Oddisee has a sound that is undeniably captivating and a pleasure to the drums in your inner ear. Track List & Soundclips:| 01 | Still Doing It | clip | ||||
