Recorded over a feverish two months in Berlin, Germany during the second half of 2010, renowned New Zealand hip-hop soul icon Ladi6's sophomore album The Liberation Of... is a heart warming work fluid in sound, content and scope.
Handcrafted while Ladi6 was in the midst of a sprawling six month European/UK tour which saw her grace stages alongside the likes of Gil Scott-Heron, Mos Def and Mayer Hawthorne, The Liberation Of... was produced by Parks and respected German hip-hop producer/DJ Sepalot (of Blumentopf). With session features from drummer Myele Manzanza (of Electric Wire Hustle), German backing vocalist Esther Adams and Fat Freddy's Drop horn player Toby Laing, counting in at 10 songs deep, The Liberation Of... offers a unique blend of modern Antipodean soul'n'beats music and contemporary European grooves.
From the vibrant "claps and synth" soundscape of lead single 'Bang Bang', to the hypnotic mid-tempo magic of 'Like Water', the surprisingly up-tempo feel of 'Jazmine D.L' and beyond, The Liberation Of... takes the template Ladi6 and Parks set forth on her 2008 debut album Time Is Not Much and stretches it into new, previously untapped avenues of sound.
Be it the digital funk of 'Goodday' or the jazz referencing arrangements of 'Koln', as the emotional and musical successor to Time is Not Much, The Liberation Of... maintains a firm emphasis on the qualities we associate with Ladi6, detailed well-thought lyrics, smoky vocal delivery and sophisticated danceable modern rhythms. The Liberation Of..., much like Time Is Not Much, looks set to under the clarifying light of live performance and repeat listening, smoulder into the hearts of listeners across the planet.

By the age of 15, David Rodigan was DJing at school dances and youth clubs. The infectious, crazy back beat of Jamaican Ska first captivated him as a teenager in the mid 60's, it was a driving, energetic sound which he found impossible to resist. When the pace cooled down and condensed into Rock Steady David was equally enamoured because the sweet, aching vocal style of Jamaica's young stars could be heard to full effect.
The music was fresh, original and soulful. His fascination for these sounds became an obsession as he began what was to be a life long love affair with the music of Jamaica and for the past 30 years he has had the privilege of playing these songs on the radio and in clubs. In 1978, David Rodigan obtained a job on Radio London to alternate with Tony Williams on the Reggae Rockers programme. A year later he was offered a permanent slot at Capital Radio to present Roots Rockers, which ran for 11 years. Kiss FM when it re-launched in the early 90's as London's first legal 24-hour dance music station then offered David Rodigan a show where he currently hosts the Sunday night slot from 11pm till 1am.

With this recording Hopepa enlisted his younger brother Sam Lindsay along with collegues Ian Gordon and Toby Laing. Then he summoned Mike Fabulous, the Yeabley Brothers and PK Hoskin. Still not satisfied, Hopepa called in favours from the likes of Craig Poll, Lucien Johnson, Will Ricketts and Adam Tijerina and finally the ensemble was complete. Early in 2010, THE YOOTS! began to chart a slightly different course. Along with the rocksteady rhythms of Don Drummond and the Skatelites, other sounds: famous melodies from Aotearoa began to feature on the programe. Available Here

He enlisted his younger brother Sam Lindsay along with collegues Ian Gordon and Toby Laing. Then he summoned Mike Fabulous, the Yeabley Brothers and PK Hoskin. Still not satisfied, Hopepa called in favours from the likes of Craig Poll, Lucien Johnson, Will Ricketts and Adam Tijerina and finally the ensemble was complete.
With Ho at the Helm, the new group set out to navigate a musical passage somewhere between Calypso-Ska and Country-Soul.
THE YOOTS! took the stage at the Cuba Street Carnival, a series of outdoor festivals - as well as late night appearances too numerous to enumerate. Wild excitement and heaving dance floors followed THE YOOTS! at every turn and the air crackled with the strains of the finest party music - songs from the distant corners of the globe - from east Africa to the Caribbean.
Early in 2010, THE YOOTS! began to chart a slightly different course. Along with the rocksteady rhythms of Don Drummond and the Skatelites, other sounds: famous melodies from Aotearoa began to feature on the programe. A new era had commenced.
Songs such as 'Hine E Hine' and E Papa Waiari' WERE were heard alongside strains of the Calypso-Boogie and Creole Compa. Instead of hunting through rare records to unearth musical gems from distant lands, THE YOOTS! searched through their own experiences and earliest memories to draw on the rich musical tradidtion of these islands.
Melodies travel at a speed so rapid as to be immeasurable by science. Long before the words can be heard, the melody of the song has entered the listeners' dreams and there it will forever stay. Now is the hour Aotearoa, to SING ALONG WITH THE YOOTS!!
