In recent years street art has grown bolder, more ornate, more sophisticated and—in many cases—more acceptable. Yet unsanctioned public art remains the problem child of cultural expression, the last outlaw of visual disciplines. It has also become a global phenomenon of the 21st century.
Made in collaboration with featured artists, Trespass examines the rise and global reach of graffiti and urban art, tracing key figures, events and movements of self-expression in the city's social space, and the history of urban reclamation, protest, and illicit performance. The first book to present the full historical sweep, global reach and technical developments of the street art movement, Trespass features key works by 150 artists, and connects four generations of visionary outlaws including Jean Tinguely, Spencer Tunick, Keith Haring, Os Gemeos, Jenny Holzer, Barry McGee, Gordon Matta-Clark, Shepard Fairey, Blu, Billboard Liberation Front, Guerrilla Girls and Banksy, among others. It also includes dozens of previously unpublished photographs of long-lost works and legendary, ephemeral urban artworks.

The author:
Carlo McCormick is a pop culture critic, curator and Senior Editor of Papermagazine. His numerous books, monographs and catalogs include Beautiful Losers: Contemporary Art and Street Culture, The Downtown Book: The New York Art Scene 1974-1984, and Dondi White: Style Master General. His work has appeared in Art in America, Art News, Artforum and many other publications.
The curator:
Marc and Sara Schiller founded Wooster Collective in 2001, a website that celebrates and plays a crucial role in documenting otherwise ephemeral street art. Based in New York City, the collective curated most of the contemporary images inTrespass. Its "Wooster On Paper" series presents the work of international artists in limited edition books.
The editor:
Ethel Seno received her BA in the College of Letters from Wesleyan University before teaming with TASCHEN, where she worked with William Claxton on Jazzlifeand New Orleans 1960, and David LaChapelle on Artists & Prostitutes and Heaven to Hell. Having grown up in Tokyo, she feels most at home in urban environments and currently resides in Los Angeles.

Red Bull Music Academy 2011 in Japan
Hai! The Red Bull Music Academy has circumnavigated the globe, with previous editions putting down roots in cities like Barcelona, Cape Town, Toronto, Sao Paulo, London and Melbourne. With its rep as a paradise for vinyl hunters and technology lovers alike, there have long been calls to hold an Academy in Tokyo – and this year, that's exactly where the Academy's headed, with the full clip of events, workshops and studio sessions coming to town from October 23 to November 25, 2011
The Red Bull Music Academy is an international workshop, touching down in a different city each year. Over two fortnight-long 'terms', some of the finest purveyors of rhythm and sound from all over the world gather between the Academy's walls. There's always that sense of synchronicity when music lovers find music lovers. But it's even better when they get to meet up in person.
That's why we are very pleased to invite producers, instrumentalists, vocalists, and DJs near you to apply to be part of the Academy in Tokyo.
The application form can be downloaded from www.redbullmusicacademy.com and should be sent to Academy HQ together with a music demo between February 2 and April 4, 2011.
A jury made up of label heads, music journalists and Academy team members will then carefully deliberate over each application.
Two groups of 30 will be selected to represent a broad spectrum of music styles and levels of experience: from singer-songwriters to DIY synth designers and orchestral composers or digital beatmakers.

In Tokyo, the selected participants will have the opportunity to hear lectures from pioneering mavericks who paved the way, along with trailblazing sound rebels of the present; followed by late night recording sessions putting that breadth of knowledge and inspiration into practice in custom-made studios. Then there's the chance to perform in some of the host city's most iconic clubs and concert halls. If you ever chat with any past alumni – like Warp's beat cruncher Hudson Mohawke, Brainfeeder head, Flying Lotus or Eru Dangerspiel – they often describe the experience as a game changer.
