Grammy-winning producer Nottz, who is among the most successful beat-makers to emerge from the Virginia hotbed of production talent that exposed The Neptunes and Timbaland, is prepped to release his solo debut, You Need This Music on October 12th via up and coming label Raw Koncept. The project will introduce fans to a new facet of his remarkable talent, as he has honed his rhyme delivery to a razor’s edge. Nottz is a fixture among the industry‘s heaviest-hitting producers who got his start placing his first instrumentals on Busta Rhymes’ best-selling album E.L.E in 1998. From that point, he collaborated with luminaries such as Notorious B.I.G, 50 Cent, The Game, Little Brother, Bilal, Royce Da 5’9 and plenty others to amass an enviable resume that he still supplements to this day. Though he has recently dedicated himself to mastering cadence and lyrical structure for You Need This Music, he has still managed to place compositions on upcoming projects by the likes of Rah Digga, Scarface, and the elusive Dr. Dre, who’s Detox boasts Nottz among a very select few guests. It’s work like this that has allowed him to secure his status as “your favorite producer’s favorite producerâ€, his discography including work for legends of the mixing boards like Kanye West, J Dilla, Swizz Beats, Diamond D and Pete Rock. On You Need This Music, Nottz pulls no punches, charging out of the gate over a cavalcade of snares hammered out by Travis Barker, and doesn’t bat an eye before jumping into the next number. He handles the entire production workload, extracting the emotive instrumental elements from vinyl clips with an ASR-10 sampler and adding his own lyrics. So goes the 14 track marathon, the pace kept by energetic verses by Black Milk, Little Brother, Asher Roth and Joel Ortiz and tempered by soulful hooks from Dwele, Mayer Hawthorne, Bilal and Colin Munroe. You Need This Music is unlike most producer-centric albums in that it isn’t merely a collection of songs, but a cohesive album of essential Hip Hop gems. A1. Intro feat. Travis Barker A2. Deeply funky psychedelic-surf guitar jams from Ranil y Su Conjunto Tropical (Ranil and his Tropical Band). Ranil’s Jungle Party (re-released for the first time by folks at Masstropicas and limited to 1,000 copies) brings back from the past the much loved popular music of Peruvian cumbia.
For the uninitiated, Peruvian (or Amazonian) cumbia was to Peru as Tropicália was to Brazil—a 1960s – 1970s popular music style that mixed (often irreverently) traditional music with those of African and the West. Hailing from the Belen district of Iquitos, nestled within the heart of the Amazonian rainforest, Ranil and Co. were definitely digging on some Western Surf music while keeping alive the traditional highland “huayño†dance music.
On Ranil’s Jungle Party, Ranil and his Tropical Band keep things in a mellow, funky mood with some heavy psych-surf guitar workouts. The result is a style mash-up not unlike that of African “Juju†or “High-Life†music, popularized by the incendiary Stratocaster guitar playing of King Sunny Adé. In fact, think of Ranil’s Jungle Party as King Sunny Adé jamming with some Andes dudes while on vacation in Peru. Dig?
Stand out tracks include “Marlenita†with its highly melodic guitar riff and frenetic percussion and “Chinito rulo†which grooves in an Eastern drone / psych fashion and the beautifully melodic electric 12-string of “Tus cabellosâ€. It’s largely an instrumental affair but Ranil steps up to the mic for “Denuncia a tu Pátronâ€, “El manicero†and “Carboneroâ€.
Masstropicas worked with Ranil on this vinyl LP re-release (his records were originally produced and released by himself on his own label) and we look forward to more in the future.
New !K7–affiliated label Cool in the Pool opens its account with a state of the art compilation from 24 year old Londoner Brackles. In the last six months, the Blunted Robots co-owner and FWD/Rinse FM regular has been grappling with the "future garage" tag that's been pushed his way, and he's not too keen. "Too limiting" he says. He can live with the "post dubstep" moniker, but his first commercially available mix album gives us a better snapshot of where this buzzing, vibrant scene is going than any scene name could hope to do. Songs for Endless Cities aims to capture a slice of Brackles after hours and out of hours, with the afterglow still burning, maybe the rhythms still bumping, but with the freedom to roam around a bit, enjoying and exploring sound without always having to turn back to the dancefloor. It's a mix for the mind and the soul as much as the body, and it comes from a legion of musical influences, not all of them conscious ones. It was only when Mike 'Mu' Paradinas commented on the Detroit influence he heard in Brackles' sound that the young Londoner went off to explore and enjoy the Motor City mothership, and now it's there, along with the garage, the dubstep, the house, the funky and the rest of it, all channelling into Brackles' contribution to the continuum, all helping shape his Songs for Endless Cities.
