Vampisoul presents the third volume in our series of tropical Peruvian music of the 1960s. It was labels like MAG, IEMPSA, DINSA and SONO RADIO that captured this emerging sound.
Like the previous two volumes, this album presents a little known but dynamic moment in Peru"s musical development that allowed the consolidation of new trends oriented towards what would become known by the early 70s as salsa, as well as forging a vibrant scene that incorporated cumbia, latin soul, rock, and jazz funk.

BLACK MERDA - FORCE OF NATURE LP / CD
Black Merda (pronounced Black Murder), the first all black rock band to write and play their own music in the late 1960s and early 1970s, are considered to be Black Rock pioneers as well as the originators of their own style of Black Psychedelic Rock.
They released two albums in the 1970's "Black Merda" (Chess 1970) and "Long Burn The Fire" (GRT 1972) which weren't properly promoted when first released, but are now seen as Black Rock classics by a growing number of international music fans. Their 2005 release "The Folks From Mother’s Mixer" (Funky Delicacies 2005) containing both of 1970s albums on one CD, is lauded as the most creative, lyrically and musically diverse albums of that genre. Now they're back! Like the Phoenix from its ashes! And the Butterfly from its cocoon, spreading their wings in the 21st century, funkier and musically diverse as ever, with a new batch of songs, to take you on a magical musical trip, that'll have your heads and minds bouncing and tripping, in some new directions and happy positions.  So sit back, and relax, and enjoy the Funk-Rock majesty of Black Merda's "A Force Of Nature".

Vampisoul is pleased to invite you to the second bone-breaking session with the most danceable sounds “made in Spain†from the 1960s and early 70s. Welcome again to the Sensacional Soul party!
Soul turned Spanish pop into the fuel that ignited the dance floors and parties of Spain in the second half of the 60s. For most bands, the soul explosion meant facing the “renovate or die†dilemma. After years of trying to emulate The Shadows and later The Beatles, the groups had two alternatives: joining the psychedelic movement or adapting the soul genre to the Spanish taste.   Those who wanted to follow the rock path had to bear in mind the advances in the recording techniques that led to Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, something that was virtually impossible for most Spanish bands. Besides, the record companies, radio stations and especially the public were not ready to “open their minds†to the psychedelic revolution.
Soul, however, did enjoy a bigger success thanks to the hits by the Tamla Motown and Atlantic artists, and thus many guitar groups decided to incorporate a horn section. Spanish soul became hugely popular, and during the second half of the 60s was the dominant music genre in a country still under Franco’s dictatorship. Apart from artists that imitated the purest sounds from the US, others took risks and tried subgenres such as progressive R&B, freakbeat soul, sunshine soul or psych-pop with soulish influences. This new volume offers a fantastic selection of all of them, including tracks by hit acts such as Los Bravos, Los Pekenikes, Manolo y Ramón (aka Dúo Dinámico) and obscure bands such as Jae’s Soul and Conjunto Brillant’s.
LA NUEVA BANDA DE SANTISTEBAN - SABOR A FRESA LP/CD
Reissue of this 1971 classic. An exotic cocktail of jazz, Brazilian music, flamenco influences and spaghetti-western soundtracks.
Born in Madrid in 1943, raised on copla and popular Spanish song genres, with a solid classic formation, initiated in jazz and in love with Brazilian music, Alfonso Santisteban is, among many things, different.  He was a session musician and composer for hire from the early 60s for stars of flamenco pop, author of countless soundtracks, many of them patchy, some remarkable. Santisteban also wrote innumerable melodies for an incipient TVE (Spain’s public TV broadcaster) hungry for a liberal modernity. He decided to pay this pleasant toll in order to gain moments of total creative freedom.
Let’s talk about the wonderful and impossible to find “Sabor a fresa†album (Belter, 1971), which Vampisoul is reissuing under its original title for the first time with the addition of an extra track from an ultra-rare 45 of the "Enseñar a un sinvergüenza" soundtrack. Right from the start, the title theme represents the Santisteban canon: female “da-ba-das", sounds reminiscent of copla, spaghetti-western soundtracks, his jazz devotion and the fixation with Brazil. ‘Brincadeira’ directly takes us to the beaches of Ipanema with the unmistakeable cadence of bossa nova. ‘Nuestro ayer’ and its guitar à la “Concierto de Aranjuez†marries, almost in an obscene manner, Santisteban’s obsession and his reality: Copacabana and the river Manzanares, caipirinha and the San Francisco cocktail.
VICTOR OLAIYA - ALL STARS SOUL INTERNATIONAL CD / LP

Victor Olaiya is certainly one of the legendary foundation stones of modern Nigerian music, yet he has never received much acknowlegement or really had his albums released or promoted in any quantity outside of Nigeria. So this Vampisoul release is a step in the right direction and not before time, for a 77 years old who was probably Nigeria’s leading star of 50's and early 60's, his golden years. Dr. Victor Abimbola Olaiya, the evil genius of Highlife, is still sockin’ it to them after 60 years on stage. If you’re lucky you can catch him blowing that trumpet and singing his heart out at his own celebrated 'Stadium Hotel' in Lagos, Nigeria.
This album from 1970 is from Olaiya’s Highlife / Funk phase, but its worth taking a trawl through his back pages to see how he became the Evil Genius, before you roll back the rug and get down with the Highlife-Funk.  Our carefully produced reissue comes with extensive liner notes by specialist Max Reindhart.
FRED FISHER ATALOBHORÂ - AFRICAN CARNIVAL 2LP / 2CD
The seventies was a vibrant musical period universally and the scene in Nigeria was no exception. Bands sprang up all over the country, free to fuse their traditional music with genres such as soul, funk and pop. In the midst of this creative turmoil, an effervescent style innovator called Fred Fisher – famed trombonist, vocalist, composer, songwriter - hit the world with his talent. Fred is known for high energy dance grooves and catchy melodies.
This fabulous compilation, AFRICAN CARNIVAL, takes the best songs from Fred Fisher's albums: "Say The Truth" (1979), "No Way" (1981), "Wahala Dey For Town" (1988) and Ogiza (1990), and comes with liner notes by Nigerian specialist Samuel Kayode.

From his early childhood on he was dedicated to music: he started singing in a gospel choir when he was only 6, and later on joined different traditional and cultural groups as a dancer and percussionist. In the 60s, Ghanaian youth were crazy about American soul music, and Nicholas was no exception to the rule. James Brown and Otis Redding were his idols, and by the age of 18 he started to perform himself. Shortly after, fellow musician Joe King Kologbo invited him to the Mecca of African funk music: Lagos, Nigeria. Nicholas was not only talented but also lucky. Kologbo introduced him to Fela Anikulapo Kuti, the undisputed Godfather of Afrobeat. He was able to convince the master of his skills as a drummer and singer and in 1971 became a full member of Fela´s legendary band Africa 70 as a conga player and background singer. The first record he appeared on was “Shakara†– an international smash hit and one of Fela´s greatest. Nicholas was at the right place at the right time. In the 70s, stars like James Brown, B.B. King, Ginger Baker, Stevie Wonder and Manu Dibango came to Lagos to visit Fela’s Shrine Club to hear this new and incredibly heavy thing called Afrobeat.
While playing and recording for Fela’s Africa 70 (he appeared on all of Fela’s releases between 1971 and 1978), Mr. Addo-Nettey also always had his own thing going on the side. He released two solo LPs for the Tabansi Label with the Martin Brothers Band from Portharcort, Nigeria: Mind Your Own Business in 1971 and Na Teef Know The Road of Teef in 1973. The latter, made with Africa 70 musicians and singers, is heavy Afro-funk, recorded in Ginger Baker’s highly equipped Lagos studio, where many of Fela’s albums were recorded, as well. Obviously, Fela was not amused at all about these kinds of things, even less when he heard how strong the Na Teef… album was. Reportedly, he said, “Don’t you ever, EVER play it again!†And so it was. Despite being a killer record, Na Teef… remained undercover for more than 30 years.
The story of Na Teef… would have ended there had it not been for Frank Gossner (aka DJ Soulpusher of voodoofunk.com, a dedicated cratedigger who, in the 90s, found a copy hidden at a record store in Philly, tracked down Nicholas in Berlin, and brought the album to the attention of Daptone Records.
As for Nicholas, in the 70s he experienced life in Fela’s Kalakuta Republic, a place where about 100 musicians, dancers, friends and family members of Fela lived, played, loved, and celebrated together. It was a property in Lagos that had been declared an independent state by Fela, in open defiance of the brutal dictatorship that was ruling in Nigeria at that time. The regime, which hated Fela for his radical messages and his popularity, attacked Kalakuta several times. In one of these raids, Nicholas was arrested with several other band members and remained in prison for nine months, where he was strongly mistreated. During another army attack in 1977, Fela’s mother was thrown out of an upstairs window and killed, and the whole compound was burned to the ground. The dangerous conditions became to much for Nicholas to bear. When playing at the Berlin Jazz Festival in 1978, he and other band members, including drummer Tony Allen, left Africa 70 because they didn’t want to go back to Nigeria. While Allen moved to Paris, Nicholas stayed in Berlin where he raised two sons and continues to play music to this day. Pax Nicholas now leads his own band, Ridimtaksi, which features West African musicians, continuing to play his own fresh take on Afrobeat.

After gaining high praise for his previous productions on both the Firecracker Recordings 10" series and Prime Numbers E.Ps including tracks such as "Miles Away", "R.I.P", "Piece Of Mind" & "Lost Experiment" we release "System", the debut album from Nick Moore aka Linkwood.
"System" clearly shows the breadth of Linkwood's influences with a spectrum of styles confidently blended including 80's boogie, detroit techno,house and deep soul. From start to finish the album is brimming with the drama of integral, subterranean dance music. "Robot Parade" and "Clearing The System" heavily pay homage to Kraftwerk and detroit techno, "Falling" and "Fudge Boogie" burn bright with essential boogie ingredients, "Chicago" references the raw sound of house clubs like the Warehouse and Music Box, "Tears" is an epic soulful boogie production, "Nectarin" a Larry Heardesque piece. Whilst being reflective of all this Linkwood manages to weave his own feel, sound and style throughout the album.
The album has been meticulously engineered and produced giving a distinctly powerful and affecting finish to all the tracks. Collaborating with Linkwood are Fudge Fingas, who features on keys on several tracks and the singer, comedian, entertainer Reggie Watts, who provides the vocal for "Tears".
