Ministry of Sound’s Masterpiece series has so far produced a collection of mixes that are already considered timeless by many. With dance music luminaries Andrew Weatherall, Gilles Peterson, Fabio & Grooverider, Jazzie B and Francois K taking the Masterpiece concept and curating seminal mix compilations.

For the latest instalment in this inspirational series, Ministry of Sound have employed the services of a Techno leviathan, a man who hails from the Mecca of Techno, Detroit and someone who not only grew up with the sound but is considered to be one of the foremost pioneers of the genre, a Grammy-nominated visionary and an artist who has consistently pushed the envelope when it comes to making and performing electronic music. Carl Craig is his name and we are very pleased to have such an esteemed member of electronic music fraternity contributing to the Masterpiece series.

With his label, remixes, original productions and collaborations Carl’s list of achievements is endless, indicative of a man who never stops working and whose depth of musical knowledge is unsurpassed. The concept is simple, a mix of what Carl is playing now, what he’s listening to and what he’s been inspired by. Truly an exciting prospect when you consider Carl’s history, his A&Ring for Planet-E and his dynamic DJ sets. Expect an eclectic, diverse selection of influences from The Temptations and Erykah Badu through to underground heroes like Kyle Hall.

Breaking new ground is in Carl’s nature so to complete the album he is creating an exclusive composition that will be comprised several ‘acts’, a Masterpiece first. With his compilation Carl Craig takes us on a very personal journey into his past and present inspirations, while using it as a platform to delve deeper into his own musical experimentations. Be prepared to be educated, invigorated and entertained, another Masterpiece is born.

"When I grow up, I wanna be like Omar" - Stevie Wonder There are precious few, if any contemporary UK artists whose creative credentials and influence extend as far and so consistently wide as Freestyle Records' most recent signing Omar. Since first breaking through to worldwide renown all the way back in 1991 with his first releases on Gilles Peterson's seminal Talkin' Loud label, and since going on to work with all manner of musical legends including a certain Stevie Wonder, Erykah Badu, Angie Stone, Syreeta Wright, Common, and Carleen Anderson. Omar returns with a brand new album that many say is without doubt the strongest of his entire career. The buzz generated by the single release of the album's title track, The Man, confirmed beyond doubt that Omar is very much at the top of his game, with everyone from BBC 6 Music's Gilles Peterson, BBC Radio 2's Trevor Nelson and Jamie Cullum giving both major support and high praise for the simply magnificent new high point for Omar's renowned ability to write devastatingly catchy melodies. Across the rest of this new album, opener Simplify sets the template, with its luscious and majestic string backed introduction raising the curtain on this deep, hard grooving number. Omar also joins forces with Germany's Hidden Jazz Quartett on High Heels - growling organ spars with the tough, jagged drumbeat on this tough, funk driven collaboration. Elsewhere, latin textures and rhythms have always been part of Omar's far reaching musical vocabulary, and on Come On Speak To Me and Ordinary Day restless south American beats underpin the crisp and fresh melodies. Soul II Soul's Caron Wheeler offers her distinctive voice on the duet Treat You, allowing these two legendary voices to unite beautifully. Completing the circle that began all the way back in the early 1990s, Omar has re-recorded his classic love song There's Nothing Like This, which this time features bass player to the Gods Pino Palladino. The touching sentiment remains undiminished, but the addition of soaring strings, soulful, jazzy horns, a vibrant live and acoustic feel, plus an extended and new arrangement.

“This project has consumed my whole life over the last year and half and I'm over the moon to finally be able to share it! Deep Medi, Butterz #LongLiveTheJazz”.   The album delves into the increasingly blurred sounds of grime, dubstep, and bass music alongside musical influences from artists such as George Clinton, Parliament Funkadelic and Roy Ayers. Purple synths, colourful vocoder work (think Joker and Redinho) and growling basslines litter the album, with guest spots and collaborations from Nadia Suliman & Footsie, The Milk, Terri Walker and Sam Frank sitting alongside Swindle’s solo tracks. Even the toughest beats on the album are placed side by side by delicate touches of funk and soul.

Swindle’s rise to fame began as his releases on Planet Mu and his own Swindle Productions gained attention from Elijah & Skilliam, who began to feature his music regularly on their Rinse FM radio show. A release on Butterz followed shortly after, leading to his DEEP MEDi release ‘Do The Jazz’. Having now produced tracks for the likes of Roll Deep, Chipmunk, Professor Green and Asher D, co-producing with Toddla T and Silkie and featuring on the Amy Winehouse ‘Back To Black’ tribute compilation, Swindle’s also a regular on the DJ and radio circuit, playing in clubs up and down the UK, Europe, America and South Africa whilst holding up a regular slot on Rinse FM. The album is launched with Swindle’s debut live show at Fire in June.
