Recorded in Sweden, ‘Dark is the Sun’ is a concept album based on themes and variations by British pianist/composer/arranger Greg Foat, who has created an intriguing blend of non-contemporary jazz sounds with classic scoring techniques. An exotic array of unorthodox instrumentation was utilized, including harpsichord, tubular bells and a 15 piece choir. With musical reference and influence from such luminaries as Bruno Nicolai, Michel Legrand and Serge Gainsbourg as well as a firm nod towards UK jazzmen Michael Garrick, Keith Mansfield and Alan Hawkshaw, the result is highly-listenable, enduring and fulfilling for those who like real music played with real instruments. Three years later, Ticklah has arranged a new instrumental track around the vocal, adding his own signature out-board effects, percussion and keyboard harmonies to the conscious lyrics of the "Commander". On the a-side, we are treated to a mournful yet essentially upbeat afro-workout with some exquisite guiter melodies interlocking with the charecteristic vocal. To be filed under 'Chimurenga', the Zimbabwean popular music genre based on traditional Shona Mbira music, but played with modern electric instrumentation and lyrics providing social and political commentary. Definitely a record that begs to be heard by a wider audience...
On the flipside, Daphni delves even deeper into worlds unknown, with a re-fix of an ultra-obscure mid-80's Dutch outfit that sounds like the bastard European offspring of Liquid Liquid.
