In the 70s Augustus Pablo seemed to just appear, like a vision from another world. His music was ethereal, evocative, unique. There has not really been anyone like him, before or since. His music was deeply meditative, conjuring up all sorts of mystical and exotic images, but imbued with the dignity inherent in his Rastafarian faith. He now stands recognised as Jamaican music’s best-known lead instrumentalist. ‘Message Music’ is the third full album on Pressure Sounds by Augustus Pablo.
This album deals with Pablo’s instrumentals and dubs from around the mid-80s to the 90s as we think it is time to present a re-examination of this slightly
overlooked period of his musical output. There are later cuts of some his better know tunes such as ‘A Java’. The drum machines that Pablo was using at this time still come with all the heavyweight bass lines that employed back in the 1970s. This digital sound was often accompanied by heavy use of percussion and hand drums which keep the music ‘organic’ and add to the feel of Pablo’s spiritual music.
We have selected some of the most sort after and essential of Pablo’s digital productions for this set and it includes dubs and instrumentals versions of tunes
Pablo produced with Junior Delgado, Yami bolo, Willie Williams, Ruffy and Tuffy. Pablo recorded tunes like Missing Link and Seven Winds from Zion as instrumentals and so have come with their original dub versions. Message Music is an album thats takes a look at how one of the foundation artists of dub and Instrumental kept his musical torch burning through the 80s and 90s.
The album will be a double vinyl and single cd. Photographs from David Corio and sleevenotes by Pete Holdsworth make this album an essential album for any fans of Augustus Pablo and roots music in general.
